Jay,

Crutchfield referenced my '81 as having 2 sets of rear speakers, so thiese covered speakers you found, there's no grill or openings for them? Does anyone else have these hidden speakers?

i didn't replace these speakers. they were low profile speakers ( the magnet thing is located inside the front of the speaker instead of on the back). i really didn't feel as though the would make much of a difference anyway. and since i'm not much on radio listening, plus the extra expence of the speakers, i put that money on other things.

This is fascinating. Crutchfield says that I have three sets of speakers as well ('79). Yet there are only perforated panels in the door and the far rear quarter panels above the wheel well.

Are the "mid" rear ones for real? Or was it an option, or is Crutchfield wrong?

John, Crutchfield indeed says that an '86 has 6 1/2 inch speakers, whereas it says that the '81 (and my '79) has 5 1/4s.

Has anyone tried fitting a 5x7 in the far rear area in a '79 or similar?

Oops, I just bought some 6.5" for my '81 based on Dozman, but didn't realize he was talking about later cars, looks like I'll be doing some cutting, might pay someone to do the dirty work of cutting leather.
