Here's a puzzler for the 928 gods. I have an '85s with the 5 speed. It was running fine the last time I drove it. Last weekend I went out to start the engine and nothing, nothing at all. Here's what I noticed;
The VDO underhood fuel pressure gauge was pegged out and stuck, even when disconnected.
The exhaust smelled very rich,
The spark plugs were a little burned and very wet.
We disconected the fuel pump fuse, put the pedal down and cranked the engine to try and blow out the cylinders and after a couple of cranks the engine ran up to idle and promptly died. Great I thought, problem fixed, it was just flooded. Thing is that when I plugged in the fuel pump fuse it again wouldn't start. I unplugged the fuse and again, ran up to idle and died.
I'm wondering if it's possible that the fuel pressure regulator could have gotten stuck and is responsible for a dead fuel pressure gauge and is over fueling the engine? If not that what could it be?
In the past it has periodically run a bit rough, particularly in the wet. I took it to a porsche dealer to check the plug wires and they say the wires are fine.
What can I be missing here?
I'm running out of ideas, any help would be GREATLY apreciated.

OK odds are it is flooding because the injectors are firing all the time (failed LH brain) or possibly the diaphram in the front fuel damper has ruptured and fuel is flowing into the intake. Pulling the relay stops the fuel and as soon as enough air gets in the car it starts and runs briefly until the fuel is used up. Open the hood and have some one turn on the key see if the injectors are firing nearly continuously. Pull the vacuum line on the back of the front damper have a rag handy to catch fuel and have some one briefly tern the key no fuel should be there. Have a fire extingisher ready !

Well I'm still stumped. Last weekend I had someone flip the key while I listened for the injectors, totally silent. I also pulled the fuel damper vacuum hose and cranked the engine, no fuel there. Still won't start.
I'm wondering if it's possible that it could be either;
Bad plug wires - I did find one cross-firing and there could be others.
Bad fuel pressure reg - over fueling the injectors
Bad MAF sensor.
Also, in the past the car would flood out while starting if the weather was crumby or you put your foot on the pedal.
Is this starting to sound at all familiar to anyone out there?

Check the simple things first. I was having starting problems on my car. Turned out both of the FP regulators and the pulse dampner were all bad and leaking fuel into the intake.
It happens
Crank your car over for a bit.
Pull the vacuum tube to each.
Put your finger over the vac nipple.
If its wet with gas its leaking
