Wink 86.5 928 S spec question

I just came from a website that list the 1986 928S as 32V 5.0L 288/302 hp with 10:1 compression ratio. It also says that the Prussian Blue that I have was only offered for one year 1985 to 1986. Was there a 16V version of this car offered in 1986? Now I've got this 86.5 with all leather interior and linen seats and all the trimmings.....I know the 86.5 came with nice upgrades like the bigger rotors, LSD and so on but according to this list the 288/302 hp was about as good as it gets for stock 928s. I guess i'm curious because it seems like the song says..."this was a very good year.."

No...all US spec 85 + 86 cars...(including the 86.5) were 32V engines. And rated 288HP -302 lb/ft torque...The paint, I cant tell you about. But...the big difference in the 86.5 is the exhaust, (same as S4)...the brakes (same as 87 S4)..and suspension (same as 87 S4).

They also respond really well to chip change!

In '85 - '86 (including the '86.5) only the US version of the 928 came with the 32V engine as standard option. The rest of the world had the 310hp 16V engine as standard. However the 32 V engine was available as an option but wasn't too popular.

By the way my '85 has the same colour as yours, except the interrior is also entirely dark blue. The Prussian Blue was one of the first of it's kind, the chamelleon(sp?) type of colours. Depending the angle of the light hitting the panel, it changes between bark blue and very dark purple .

you are right about the chips Imo...my 86.5 really "woke-up"...after the Autothority chips were installed. It took probably 10 minutes for the LH to reset after the battery was disconnected while the chips were installed...but it did make a "marked" performance improvement.

Most 86 Euros are 4.7L 16V 10.4:1. They are basicly your car with 310hp and 200lbs less weight and lower gearing. More accurately, an 86.5 is an 85-86 US with the upgraded suspension and brakes that all 86 Euros have.

Wow, IMO can you steer me to the chip set that I'd need? How much, where and how difficult to install? What are the gotcha's for this upgrade?

No "Gotchas"...(at least with the "Autothority" brand chips. They are a plug in replacement for the factory EEPROMS in the LH fuel management computer, and the EZK ignition management computer in your car. They are located in the passenger footwell, along the cowl, bhind the carpet panel with the access strap. Replacement of the factory chips is straightforward and easy...and the Autothoritty chips come with complete installation instructions. Some of the "knock-off" chipsets on Ebay though...I'm not sure about how well they work (although I'm told they are just as effective as the Autothority chips...I personally cannot attest to their benefit)...anyhoo the 85-86.5 model cars seem yto get the best kick from the chips for the investment (I know my car really woke up after the install)...there are no "driveability' issues as a consequence of the install (at least in my experience)...and I've had them in for 5 months now. All good to report ! That said...ther was a fellow in the Classifieds with the Autothority chips for the 85-86.5 cars for $200 if I recall correctly. This is less than 1/2 the retail cost for them, and his are "New in Box" per the description. (absolutely NO affiliation here either)..Just thought I'd mention it... Give them a try if you are considering such a mod...I know you will be happy, provided everything else on your car is in proper working order. Don't want to go with an aftermarket performance chip upgrade if your car has "issues"...address them first...

Once you get chips, open up the exhaust and you'll be even happier!

maybe...I have never compared before/after gas milage. If it was affected...it wasn't noticeable. I never really clocked the milage on this car anyway. When it needs gas...it gets gassed. BUT...the Autothority instructions DO mandate the use of premium grade fuel. WHich...I've always used in this car anyway, both before and after the chip upgrade. All I can tell you is the "seat of the pants" pulling power is "noticeably" upgraded with the chips installed...

Chips are good way to grab a bit more horsepower. My first 5sp recorded 281/278 on the dyno, with just chips.

Another quick horsepower grab, is with an x-pipe in place of the cat. Nice sound enhancement as well as a weight reduction.

Yes indeed it was!!

And yup - chips are good!

86.5 can be considered a very limited production run. Ok, well, actually the pre 86.5 cars were just using up the last of the suspension and exhaust parts from the parts bins. Not only was a certain manufacturer lazy with weighing their products, they also had problems with basic math in procurement / materials management as they moved from one model year to the next.

Not to critique an unnamed German car company or anything. I really shouldn't critique. I too might have done the same if were under the influence from listening to 99 Mit Luftballon, as well as those other crazy '80s hits.

Seriously though, by sheer numbers, our 86.5 cars are pretty rare. By upgradability, our 86.5 cars are pretty desireable. S4 and later may be a bit more elegant, but what a remarkable driver we have with our 86.5 S cars!

86.5 floor pans are S4 parts too (same part#s).

There are typos and mistakes in the manuals. Example, 80-82 torque is often listed as 265 ft/lbs, but should actually be 256 (348nm).

I agree what James said and it's extremly easy to instal. Takes 30 min maybe an hour tops to install. Mine set was from e-bay for $75. I bet any money they are Authority clones and they work excellent (~25hp increase). It takes a few min after install for the computer to re-learn the new setup, after that the car will show it's full ponential! In fact they work so well, I kept them in after the supercharger install
