I'm probably not going to go the replacement motor route simply because of the labor costs and no place to put a used motor until it sells.....but some used lifters with far less miles on them sure seems to be a reasonable option I hadn't considered....now I will!

Just an update. Went to see the lifters myself today.....5 of the 8 from one side were toast! I've authorized replacing just those on that side. If someone buys this car and wants to do the ones on the other side thats up to them but I'm not inclined to spend another $1000 or so to do them now. Next owner can spend a few thousand and get this car in tip top shape.....should be a good buy for the next person. So ends the saga! The end.

No, but it's probably only a matter of time. The older lifter style loses its pliability with age and will not fully 'pump up', resulting in continous lifter noise.

Mechanic also told me there is no check valve on this early model car which I suppose allows oil to escape the lifters and cause more wear when starting it up. Add that little bit of wear each time it was started over 26 years and 146,000 miles and they're done.
