Clutch intermediate plate adjustment?

Clutch intermediate plate adjustment?
While I had the clutch cover off to move the driveshaft back towards the gearbox, I decided to do the 'devek' clutch realignment of the intermediate plate. On using a big pry bar to actuate the clutch arm, I could see that the intermediate plate was releasing the visible clutch plate far later than the outer plate. I used a big screwdriver to push the intermediate plate towards the engine, and then the gap and release point seemed even. I decided to adjust this as I'd noticed that there seemed to be 2 biting points in the clutch. After adjustment, the clutch felt much better and while moving drove perfectly, but when stationary it then became impossible to select first with out a crunch, and very difficult to select reverse without nasty grating noises - which would suggest a shaft is still spinning in there. Have I adjusted the intermediate plate too far?

Don't know baout "too far" but you need to get it set right. Many posts on this! My prefered method is the "crank 'em back" method whereby the adjusters are forced all the way towards the rear.

Yes... it "should " self adjust forward with a bit of driving. Normally you only need to move the plate rear ward when you install a thicker new disc against the flywheel.

Dennis here in Michigan (SueDen on Rennlist) just went through this. He spoke to the mech at the P-car dealer around the corner (who used to own a 928), and he said, the short shaft can develop some "grooves" for lack of a better word that cause the plates to hang when self adjusting. His solution is to take some valve lapping compound and run the shaft back and forth through the plates (or the plates back and forth over the shaft - your choice ), then clean and re-lube. Dennis said his clutch no longer hangs on first and second, and feels like butter. YMMV

My intermediate plate was actually stuck to one side. Thought it was the shaft, no amound of cleaning or lubing fixed it. A new intermediate plate solved the problem.
