Torque tube to tranny mating problem - HELP!
After reconning the synchros on my 81 Euro S with 5-speed, (see separate post for details of that) I've bolted the whole lot back together. The 'box is properly mounted, the splines are mated correctly, and the torque tube flanges fully mated with the flanges on the input side of the box and all bolted together. The tt was never taken out and remains fully mated at the clutch end too.
So, now I'm trying to fit the pinch bolt through the inspection port. I've got the clamp in the right place, and the bolt won't go in - it appears the splined shaft out of the torque tube hasn't mated far enough into the input shaft to allow me to do this? The 'box must be in the right place as it's mounting is defined by the outer case of the tt, so how has the splined shaft not mated properly?
The car drives OK (just 20 metres or so to see if the problem would sort itself out), all gears can be selected OK - FWIW blipping the throttle without any exhaust on is very satisfying - how can I get the pinch bolt on properly?
thanks in advance for any help,
Matt

the square clamp may have rotated around the tranny output shaft. the shaft has a groove, so you have to make sure it's lined up or the bolt won't go in. take a flashlight and look in the hole to see if the square clamp is indexed properly. the bolt should be able to be installed with or without being connected to the driveshaft. and i wouldn't drive it without the clamp. might be easy to strip the splines.

problem seems to be that the driveshaft has moved in the tt down towards the clutch rather than any rotational slot finding. Have had a suggestion to remove the clutch cover and use a flat head screwdriver to move the driveshaft back towards the gearbox. Will try tomorrow and report in.

the driveshaft moving is the most likely since the short clutch shaft can usually slide further into the pilot bearing there is little to keep the shaft from moving. Especially if the plastic sleeves between the drive shaft and bearings in the carriers are worn.

Cheers for that Jim, all seemed to work fine. While I was in there, I adjusted the intermediate clutch plate which seems to have caused another problem which I'll put in a sep post.
Thanks again
