Default Exhaust system

I'm wondering if the front pipes with cats off of an 87 will fit on an 82? I want to temporarily make a change over to actual dual exhaust on an 82 and have my 87 front piece(s) left over from my cross-over installation. I'll eventually put a cross-over on this as well, but in the meantime I'm looking for an inexpensive installation.

I realize everything on back will need to be fabricated new, but this would save an initial big expense. Make the wife happier. Ease into it, you know.

Thanks
Rod

I think that the headers are ~1.5" short on one side to allow this: Check in the archives/search for S4 headers adapted to a 16v - I've seen a definitive statement on this before, but cannot recall accurately to 'know' this to be true.

I think you need to install 85-86 manifolds then a small spacer to use either the S3 or S4 downpipes and cats. You might be able to weld the stock downpipes onto the S4 cats without much trouble.

Thanks,

If it isn't a direct bolt on, I think I'll just wait until I can get a cross-over. I don't want to get a lot of money wrapped up in something that I don't ultimately want as a final solution.

I have ex manifolds and a cat from my '83 Euro that might bridge the gap for you. the cat is a two in and two out to accomodate the euro true dual setup. I would sell you those pieces for a very reasonalbe price. I'd like to get them out of my garage. Let me know. PS the cat looks like new. I am sure it was installed to get the car federalized and as soon as that happened, the manifolds and cat came off and some MSDS headers went on.

Cheers,

JF

The passanger side pipe will be about 1.5" short. Any mufler shop can make this fit. All they have to do is cut the pipe and weld in an extension.

I think it will bolt right up. It would only be short on one side if you were using the 85 and 86 manifolds on the 2 valve heads.

Mine is/will be an 82 US.

So, you think it will work? That would be great.

All the downpipes leading into the cats are of equal length whether you have a 2 valver or 4 valver. The only time that gets screwed up is when you put the 85 or 86 manifolds on the early engines.

I have an S4 cat bolted to the stock exhaust manifolds on my 84 Euro S motor. If you want to bolt an S4 cat to your stock 82 exhaust manifolds, it will definitely work.

BTW,

You need to change your Battery box as well. The 86.5 and up had a new smaller battery and box. The duel exaust will not fit between the rear of the transaxle and the front of the battery box on the earlier model cars. You'll have to cut out your existing batt box and weld in a later model to make this work. You'll also have to get the heat sheilds necessary to do this. (Especially around the front part of the fuel tank. How do I know this? I'm contemplating doing this since my battery box is toast and I need a new one anyway!

Well,... that starts the day with a downer. I really am not looking forward to replacing the battery box.
I guess if I have to, I can, but why can't it just be simple?

Thanks for the heads up.
