Well...I only paid for 84 in a 65 but he stated in his report that he was doing 121mph and I was walking away from him. (I was doing approx. 150-155) He came on the highway behind me after seeing my tail lights go by and tried to catch me. I encountered traffic a few miles down the road and slowed down to 65ish. A few minutes later he came flying up behind me and "lit em' up". After argueing alongside the road for a couple of minutes he wrote me for 100 in a 65. I was glad for that until I went to court to pay it. This was in August a few years back and they informed me that in July the ticket would have been $120 but in August it was $440. I told them to prove my speed. The highway patrolman stated that he couldn't catch me and he was topped out at 121mph. He also stated that he didn't clock me on radar or pace me (because he couldn't catch me!) They dropped it to 84 in a 65 and I just cut my losses and accepted it. It was still over $200...

I have many more...

70 in a 55 in a not so street legal setup. I was 16 and the cop was with a trainee in an unmarked car. I was bringing the car up to the house from teh shop and the stoplight at the entrance ramp is oh so tempting to accelerate away from. He said he had clocked me in two different speed zones so I could get 2 tickets for that, the car didn't have insurance card in it, i dind't have drivers license with me, unlawful showing of speed, noise pollution (wide open exhaust) etc etc etc.... Worked out to 16 points (lose your license at 15), he was trying to scare me and did a decent job.

Went to court and ended up paying 40 bucks for teh speeding ticket. The tough part was being escorted home by the officer to my waiting parents who also got lectured by the officer.

rumor has it - in '88, 135 on the pch w/'85 944 in malibu (2am)... no traffic, but one sherriff hiding in a driveway... took him 8 miles to catch up (I slowed to 65 and waited to see if he'd find me - he did)... reduced it to 70/traffic school/yawn...

100+ w/85S (sort of stock), not so barren 65 zone back in '99. most traffic was at 75+, passed sherriff transporting a bad guy a bit too fast. no time to mess w/me - so I was briefly reprimanded

last weekend - big oops. 110-155 in a 55. few cars in a short passing lane wouldn't move right, so a brief burst accidently put me at 110 (this friggin stroker is a monster!!). was clear and slowing just as a chp flashed by the opposite way w/radar on (my escort went wild). had a huge head start, all the cars behind me in w/no more passing zones w/oncoming traffic - tough/impossible for him to catch up. so I may have accidently kept going and been amazed to see the new motor ram the spedo up to 155! was only 2 mi from home, and into the garage in a flash. hung out on my front porch (hillside home w/great view), watched him comb the area for 20min before giving up... VERY afraid to drive it now... maybe next weekend I'll let the wife drive it, or trailer it to greg's and let him have it for a month, hehehe... this thing belongs on a track.

Exceeding 100mph in CA is "22348(b) CVC" it is listed as an infraction.....however it is a 2 point infraction with approximately $1200 fine.....sure I'm a cop...but ask me how I know?!?! Lets just say I drove really fast before I was a cop!

The bad part is if the cops having a "bad bald day" and writes you for reckless driving (CVC 23103(a)) which a misdemeanor (i.e arrestable, but a weak one at that)..then your car gets towed for a 30 day impound + whatever DMV does do you...so in other words it would really suck!

dont' forget the ins. headaches too... and if another car is involved - it's called racing and they can crush your car now in CA (in addition to all the "bonus" points, fines, etc)... and dont forget eluding is a felony!! (can you say butt rape?) in fact, LAPD recently shot a pass. in a vette that eluded - ouch!

now I'm scaring myself even more! maybe I'll sell my shark and hide in a limo before anything bad happens...

Rob:

A little bird flew in my window and told me that once Smokey loses sight of you, you're home free. Check it out. I would jump back in and drive that beast after the bear left the area. Maybe I'll check my sources for definitive rules on this subject. You shouldn't ruin your whole month just because one bear has his nose out of joint.

Brian,

I think I was cited for the 22348 (b) you mentioned once in my Mercedes, and the other time in the shark.. I know it is an expensive ticket... Both times, it was written "Max Speed." How fast was I really going... "Officer, I do not know, I was focused on driving the car, and did not look at the speedometer. How fast was I going?" At least I was not carted off to the county lockup to see the judge.

I remember there being a 22348 (a) and (b) code while looking over the stuff with my attorney.. When I got pulled over in the shark, I was on the Fwy. with a Mustang Cobra.. He was not as lucky as I was, they called the flatbed for him, and I got to drive off. One car saw him and I pass, and radioed ahead to another car a few miles up the road to pull us over. It took several minutes for the one that called in the violation to catch up, then they pulled us both over.

I was asked if I was racing on the public road, to which I replied I would never do such a thing, although the car is set up for the track, If I wanted to go really fast, I would do that at a track, a sanctioned event, or in Germany. Besides, I told him there would be no race between the Cobra and I period. Like shooting fish in a barrel....!

Between the attorney fees and the fine, it was several $k. The ticket I got in the Mercedes was $300, as I bargained with the judge myself, and he said ok...

I was also stopped by the CHP on Hwy 1 and accused of doing in excess of 150mph.... Funny thing is, that time I was not speeding at all. The officer called another car to verify something, and the other guy agreed with me, so he said blah, blah about a warning, and told me he would be watching. That SOB was an arrogant *****, and if I were to have a hunting accident, he might look like that big deer in my scope. yuck..

Others have been much more civil.

Yup Rob, that's why there are "hot pursuit" laws. An officer may cross jurisdiction lines so long as he keeps you in sight. Once sight has been lost for a reasonable period of time, drive on. Think about it. Not that a thing like that would ever happen again, right? If it does it probably would only happen when the guy to whom you loaned your car did it.

So the cop looses sight of you for a while.....finally catches up (hopefully on a different road going a different direction) you say "I saw that guy in the red porsche...he flew past me like I was standing still!"

The little bird advised me to be on foot when he caught up.

thx ron... I'm sure he'd still pull me over just to settle up, ck me out & let me know he knows (heck, if I were him I would) but it does iinda scare me to think it now only takes 3-4 secs to go from safe & legal to jail bitch... and this aint' dukes of hazzard county nothing like quitting while one is ahead for sure

but this topic does make one wonder - obviously anything typed here is only idle BS. but what about bill ball's burn out, and other "928 driving" videos - could they be used as evidence and the driver cited if aired on the web, found by law enforcement??? I do recall in car videos found at the scene used as evidence, but what about later??? ie speaking of BS, didn't brittney spears just get nabbed by nothing more than a video?? hmmmm......

I have been warned by a cop that another guy in a car very similar to mine was driving way to fast.. I believe I told you that story at the pizza place after the go-kart.
