Default Looking at a project, early 928, tips for success?

Owner said the car is an '81. It has auto tranny and electronic injection. Apparently it ran fine up to 2002 then would not pass emissions. Mecahanic who replaced 02 sensor, fuel pump, belts, rollers, and intake boots. It still would not pass GA emissions so he parked it.

I was not able to grab a VIN to decode, perhaps I'll remember a pen next time. Body is in ok shape, interior is shot, engine bay looked pretty clean and nothing obvious was missing. I suspect bad cats caused it to fail since his NOX was high.

So.. the questions.
1. Will an '81 make a good track car? Aside from the obvious weight cutting measures, is there any reason couldn't run it well with new stock suspension and brake components. (or reasonably affordable aftermarket parts?) I'm looking for a cheap project to beat on.
2. What's everyone's favorite cage?
3. Quick tips to make sure the car is a good performer and safe? (other than the obvious)

Thanks in advance!

An 81 can make an excellent track car - except I would not want to build a track car around a 3-speed auto. Unless you are getting this car for almost free, converting it to a 5-speed is not cheap or easy. If your goal is a track car, I would hold out for a 5-speed.

I used to run an almost stock 81 on the track, recently bought a 79 track car.
