I went to see a new Cayman today in Palo Alto. Nice paint. Lots of headroom for a helmeted driver. Interesting luggage storage capacity. Probably should have test driven it, because I was so joyous to return to my 928 and sit in it and play with the steering wheel / instruments adjustment, and trip out on it having just turned 20. On the way back to the 928, I was thinking how much I would have left over from the sticker price of the Cayman ($71,000) if I bought a low mileage 928 GTS instead, and kept it another 20 years. Better start looking before they are all gone............

I was at Sunset Porsche in Beaverton, Oregon, this afternoon to pick up some 928 bits I had ordered. A new Cayman was in the showroom so I had a look. I didn't sit in it. I thought overall it was a very nice looking car. I was struck by what a dinky little thing it appeared to be; the cabin sort of claustrophobic. The paint (metallic black with some fancy name) was very well done and the general fit and finish was superb. The sticker price here was 66k and I noticed the city/freeway mileage rating was barely better than my 19 yr old 928 which in my opinion is twice the car. While I'm sure the Cayman can run rings around my S4 given a twisty enough road, and I wouldn't refuse it if I should find one in my garage tomorrow morning, I did think it was a puny showing for the result of more than a quarter century of development since the 928s introduction. I was pleased to walk out and climb into my 928, fire up a real engine, and leave in style.
I drove one a week ago. The local dealer, Crown Porsche (no affiliation), held an open house, with 4 Cayman's, a Carrera 4 and 4S to drive. I took a Cayman for a 15 minute drive on some back roads. Nice car, very quick, nimble. Sort of a rough ride on 19's though.
But I can get 3 sets of golf clubs (with bags) in the back of the GTS with no problems, and could probably get a driver, 5 iron, wedge and a putter, some golf ***** and shoes (without a bag!) in the back of the Cayman.
Plus, I think the front trunk of a Cayman would be great for football tailgating. Put a pony keg on ice up there no problem! It would need to be a leased Cayman, though.
I'll keep what I've got.
