S4 Tail lights
In checking out my electrical, noticed that several lights were out on the right rear tail light. Pulled the light and removed the harness only to find the the strip metal contact in the socket had rust off and had evaporated into thin air.
Checked with Sunset and a new harness is $130., 928 International has a used harness for $80.and eBay had 2 new tail lights that went for about a hundred. The strip metal piece can be easly replaced, my question is what metal would be good to use to make the contact out of, the original metal is either a nickle or something that has been chromed.
I have just topped off the fluids in the car after my cat fire and engine rebuild and will atempt to start this weekend.
Any imput is always appreciated and TIA.

I'd vote for copper, but it may be hard to find some that is stiff enough to hold shape and keep pressure on the bulb contact.

Pretty common, I found a used harness for $20 (sockets in great shape, wiring terrible) and used the good sockets in my old harness. A long while ago someone thought a VAG part might work.

The sockets are in PET as 944 parts. You can buy them new from the P dealer, sometimes from a VW dealer if you can take the old part with you, or maybe from one of the Big 3 who knows how they fit.
The tabs are beryllium-copper alloy so they are stiff enough to spring back when deflected by the bottom of the bulb. I'd look for a new replacement socket before i started trying to find material and fab just the new strips.

Just looked at the price in your catalogue..............$160, yikes.
Not sure what Bob is referring to..............can't find the connector in the 944 PET

I was talking about the bulb sockets. I need to look at the PET and a socket to be sure which one. I've had good luck selecting a similar-year 944 for parts like this, always with a visual confirm at the P store.

Thanks for the imput. This morning I was able to buy two used harnesses wich will solve my problem. I did take a 944 tail light apart to see if I could use some parts but the 944 exterior lights are not simular to the 928 S4 lights.

KC: I got my harness from Rog100 who is on this list. He was dismanteling a S4 and I bought two from him. Mine was the right that failed, but the wiring harness is the same for both sides.

Does anyone know if the correct 944 part number for the sockets was ever found?
