Yeah you were lucky! I bought an early '86 first, but that was before I found the rennlist and got educated in the differnces.

Here is a pic I took of them both:

Yup, the '86.5 is what I meant, and what I have. I almost bought an unusually well maintained '84 but a customer at Devek spotted me looking at it and invited me to drive his 32 valve car. I never looked back and wish I could win the lottery to buy another '86.5 to keep as a spare.
If you keep this frame of mind....you'll end up like Shane...for sure !!!

I know the '83s have a single pipe system and I'm guessign the '84s are the same. My '85 is # 174 so it is a pretty early '85 and it has dual pipes all the way just like the one on the right. Heinrich, I'm not sure how early the '85 has to be to have the single system. Are you sure there were '85 like that? My '86.5 project car has the one on the left.

He is calling the one on the right a single exhaust. In a sense it as both pipes dump into a single resonator/mixing chamber then back to two pipes which again dump into the rear muffler.

Lance I don't think so, I mean I like mine it makes for a nice sound when you add the x-pipe to it. The x-pipe with the system on the left is too quiet with the larger resonators, and if you pull the rear muffler and put a bypass in its' place the system gets real loud. It is still a nice sound, but gets to be too much for the long hauls. Sounds great for the track though!

Performance wise Lance it will do just fine for your 79. They breath well enough for 32v engines with 288hp, they should do a 16v just fine. Hell the one in the pic did just fine with 403hp.

Shane, I saw Rosalie's and Thurston's Irises side by side and Thurston had a single IIRC.
