Excellence did a nice, although not very in-depth comparison between an '87 928 (Jim Wolcott in NM- damn nice looking car) and an '88 Carrera (Mike Butcher- bought off Rennlist). Parts of the article were hard to read, as the text was obsured by the background photos on several pages.
Overall, I thought it was a fair portrayal.

As usual, the 911 "wins" because the Carrera is supposedly less "complex" and the 928 is maintenance-intense. Until then, the comparo is a "tie." Score one for what's his name at Sports Car Market magazine who insists-- even though never having owned one-- that 928s are maintenance intense.

One hears the "complexity" objection a lot. I still thought the comparison was reasonable. If they were to really expound on complexity, and call it "features", like ABS etc, maybe the objections wouldn't be so resolute.
'Excellence' is really irrelevent to owning a 928, so I probably won't renew my suscription-- for the second time.

Well, speaking from experience, the 928 is more maintenance ontense. Especially if you have vacuum problems in a 928. But I will say that my current 964 is just as complex as my old 928 if not more so. All in all, my 944S2 was the easiest to work on.

almost impossible, I'd say. They also failed to include one decent shot of the 928, IMHO. Some artsy angles, but no good overview.
I sent a letter to the editor, you can too!

Diificult to read.
I emailed the editior of Excellence and he apologized. He said he never meant to print the text over photos but they slipped through.
Too bad.

I thought it was a good superficial article which proves you can truly love two women. One beautiful that can be fiesty when she chooses and the other fiesty who can be beautiful too. As an owner of each I think the conclusions are valid. I love deciding which to drive which day. Too bad they got cute with the text/over/photo art. The magazine could use a new layout person.

Was there any doubt that the 911 would win, but they did make it close.
I picked up a new auto rag "MPH" which appears to be a cross between FHM & road & track. One of the cover stories is a sub $5000 porsche, which turns out to be a $1117 wiessach 928s. It's great to see two 928 articles in the same day

The 928 pictured in MPH belongs to Dennis Szremet and is a stunning Weissach that would be far more than $5000...There is also an article on a 928 race car in Porsche and 911 World. That's three!

There were so many underhanded compliments (to the 928) and defference to the 911, it made me sick to read that article. At once the author says he'd give it to the 911 for simplicity, but he's looking for a 928. WTFO?
Bottom line, the eveolution of the 911 takes it right into what the 928 was 20 years ago. A GT car that lets you drive it fast with confidence.
I took personal offense to the remark about the 928 (especially an S4) being "clunky" at all. My wife and I discussed this, and decided that what he refers to is the intensity of the 928 being overmuch for the in-town stop/go experience. In other words, stifled is a better word.

The 928 has its own but very few such massive failures. the engine will run unlimited miles with rings wearing long before the bores, but the autos have thrust bearing failure and the 32V engines suffer oil starvation under high-G.
Perception that 928's are more expensive to maintain comes from 1) expensive labour-intensive dealer work and 2) as a resilt of (1), often-postponed regular maintenance piles up and hits in one big bang.
Once you have your 928 up to scheduled maintenance, it will cost you nothing in maintenance except oil and filters.
