Default Looking for a Machine Shop reccomendation in MN

I need to have my block honed for new rings and a set of heads freshened.

Anyone have a good reccomendation for a machine shop in MN or WI?

TIA

First off these blocks don't get a traditional hone. No bottle brush. No three-stones on the drill. Most people put in new rings without touching the walls and that's what the manual calls for. They can be bored. The last step is an etching that takes the AL back and exposes more silicon. Some people have theirs nickasil coated.

I've had good work done at Headwerks in Bloomington. Last time I was in there, though, they ripped me off on an engine re-build job. He wanted the work bad in December but by April had more work than he could handle and backed-out of the job. Didn't stop him from charging me for work I did myself. (Yes, argued and got a reduction but later realized it wasn't enough.)

Maybe a post here: Minnesota928s@yahoogroups.com

Thanks guys,

I have a broken valve spring. The bores look perfect. No vertical scoring. I think I need to read the manual.

Hi Tony,

Yes, I've had some refer to the Alien as a Sharkster...

I had a long talk with a good friend this morning about the bores and rings. He is an instructor in a tech school that trains BMW mechanics. I trust he ideas, thoughts and theory. He is a deep thinker and a top of the line McGuiver type wrench head. He suggested I just have the heads repaired and bolt them back on the motor, then do a cold leakdown to see if I have any weak ring veriences.

These motors are way over designed and engineered. With nice clean bores, is there a real need to un-torque the rods and change rings for the sake of saying you did it? I'm not sure.

Then I had a conversation with another friend today that told me I wouldn't acheive any real results unless I did the leakdown at opporating temp...

So I'm searching for more real world info. I don't think I want to do the lower end unless I have to. So what do you guys think?

Let the flames begin!

Id do the leak down at operating temp. Better indication of the health of the motor in its running state....warm and everyhting freshly lubricated.
Thats what i did.
