NOT to mention the S2000 Hondas...from what I understand...the Boxster is an non issue compared to the 'ricer"...

In regards to 928 pricing, I just picked up the march Classic Motorsports. On page 38 the 928 is listed #2 on their top ten cars to watch in 2006. They call it one of the best GTs of all time, and mention all the favorable press they have been getting.

Once the motorinng press latches on to a car, the days of bargain motoring are numbered. LOL

By the way, my girlie car is listed as #3. Go figure.

Jim, the Boxster engine is accessible from up top but it requires a bit more work than raising a hood. You must operate the convertible top, unlatch connectors that "accordian" it, pull the top up from the bottom, and lift a piece of carpet and a piece of plastic sound insulation equipped with quick-release latches. It reminds me of a 928 air box. WTF? The first time I removed it, it took me ten minutes. Now it takes me five.

It is tight-- but no tighter than a friend's Audi TT. The 928 looks spacious in comparison but it's all relative, I had a friend who has a sweet Cadillac Sedan Deville from 1972 (cavernous engine compartment) tell me my 928 "looks tight in there." Time marches on.

You can check the power steering level and RR the air filter from up top. To get at the plugs, you have to remove the rear wheels, I believe-- but I have not done that procedure yet.

I love my S4 auto, a recent find. It is everything the Boxster is not. The Box, on the other hand, is everything the 928 is not. It's true-- this thread has been hijacked. Incidentally, I traded my old 928 five-speed for a Boxster but only because I thought the Boxster was so very cool I had to have one. Then I lamented the 928's absence and got back in the 928 fold just over a year later.

Regardless, maybe the Boxster is a "girlie" car. Porsche markets the Boxster to women; the 2005 New Boxster brochure shows a woman driving it. Everything they do is calculated. But to use that phrase in the pejorative is just sexist.

As an aside, I was stopping at a drive-through with my Boxster last summer and a nice looking woman walked by and said, "That is a beautiful car." Maybe she was thinking about picking up the car instead of the driver. Dag nab it. Nothing works out the way you want it to.

Of course these cars, just two years old go for $31,000, what used to be a car that stickered for $61,000 - you can get A LOT of car for the money if you can afford a fairly fresh one. These cars lost half their value in just two years - that's a hard depreciation hit

This is a great thread. Nothing against Boxsters, I'm sure they're pretty good cars, but I'm 6-2 and like having a hatchback to put stuff in the back. And I could never be happy with a car whose engine you can't even see, let alone work on.

The Boxster may have 'saved' Porsche, but the limited-production, hand-crafted-in-Stuttgart front-engine models are in a different category. Can you imagine a Boxster ever being considered a collectible?

I think the brand is going to suffer as Boxsters and Cayennes put more and more distance between volume aspirations and what Porsches used to be.

I own a 928 & love it. I would love to have a Boxster, different car, different mission. I also still own a Miata. I find it very irritating that you "guys" calling Miatas and Boxsters "chick cars" have for the most part, never driven either car and probably bought your 'Porsch' to compensate for a deficiency in another part of your anatomy. Just my .02

That is the reason i used the term, and when i used it, I in no way meant it as a slight to those who own one or to women.

Different mission exactly bill, but heinrich started the thread saying at least the way i read it, that the boxster would be DIRECT competition for the 928. Also the reason i am responding once more is to let some of you know that i have personally experienced a mid engined, well handling sports car in the 360 CS. So I know how one will perform.

But there is no way a boxster competes with the drive i had last night in my euro and some respects the 360 loses too. The combination of coolness, looks, sound (custom exhaust), and all-out performance that a good 928 offers is just very tough to beat. Plus our interior is cavernous compared to every other exotic out there. Ever sit in a viper???

The turning and road holding ability of a 928 is just amazing and probably has something to do with the FACTS that the 928 is 3" wider and wheelbase 4" longer and our 50/50 weight probably sits lower in the engine and tranny than a boxster.

Looks preety clear to me, but then again i don't see the comparison between 944's and 928's.

I GUESS ITS BECAUSE I WANTED A 928, NOT A PORSCHE.

Some of us always wanted a 928 because of what it is and not some cheap sports car with porsche printed on it.

If its just the P-O-R-S-C-H-E on it that makes it desirable do you drive in your jordache jeans and your members only jacket???????????????????

Wow

Back on topic (sorta) since I hang around the 944 forum quite a bit, the idea of people switching from 944's to Boxsters is becoming a lot more common.

With more basket case 928’s being put to death each year, the overall value could actually increase as time goes on. Jim Page has sold every 928 since I’ve known him for over what most would consider “average market value”. Each car was perfect for their age and a damn good value for the buyer.

After driving my fathers 986S I’ve toyed with the idea of selling my 944 to pick up a Boxster or even sell the 81 928 (no way I’m selling the 79). Then again, after the SC is on this spring, my mind will probably change.

OK I guess i had to understand that there are people who might not have a particular desire. Thats why i had trouble wondering why someone would be up in the air between a large V-8 and a 4 banger. It never dawned on me until now that someone might actually have a question in their mind regarding the 2 different styles.

Given that i have seen the light i would say no impact on prices whatsoever.

I would think people looking for boxster styling and performance would look at impreza's, evo's and lancers, etc (light, nimble, quick image) and not at another porsche. Most people who care about the badge would rather lease and drive something new and under warranty.

Sorry, just could not imagine anyone being undecided about such different genre vehicles. my bad.

In my mind it would be choosing between a ford pinto 4 banger (sport version)and a ford mustang mach 1.

With apologies to Heinrich... I tend to think that lower priced 986's may lower the demand for 928's as a 986 is more recognizable to poseurs as a 'Porsch' than a 928. The 928 market would then be more inclined towards more knowledgable buyers than it is now. This may tend to drive down the value of the older, less cared for versions that the uninitiated may ordinarily go for, and possbly stabilize the value of the nicer 32 valve versions of the car. Could make it more of a buyer's market.
