Default Sound Deadner in older 928s

I'm envious of the newer 928 sound deadening, foam on wheel well, etc. Can this stuff be retrofitted to the earlier cars? Or? Road noise from the tires is not as much a problem since I go the RMB but it's still an issue.

You will get even better results if you go with Dynamat....lots of it.

Back when I was still employed and toying with the idea of a pre '87 928, I was thinking about ripping the entire interior out and Dynomatting the whole darn thing (floors, doors, etc). I'm sure it would add quite a few pounds to an already heavy car, but the sound quality would be greatly improved. Has anyone done this?

The car already comes with a very similar product installed on basically all the horizontal surfaces. It is a heavy tar type paper. You will also find some inside the doors and on the firewall. Feel free to add more if you so wish...

I plan to add tar soon. I was told regular roofing tar would work the same as Dynamat or B-quiet...but I'm going for lead...real lead sheets. Very expensive, but you get what you pay for. It's all about density. The denser material provides better sound proofing

Tarek.. Be Careful with the lead sheets...although its probably the densest material you can find...its also toxic...and if you or a passenger, or both, were to happen to brush against some exposed lead sheeting... , while nude, you could be exposed...(besides being nude)...to lead. which we all know, is lead. There fore its dangerous, like in paint.

I think Tarek is toxic enough, with all the chanklish he eats.

I have about twenty front floor under carpet foam pieces lying around if anyone needs some...

i love chanklish but then again i am lebanese ... anyways, i have filled my driver side rear well with great stuff foam from home depot and it made a hell of a difference. i will purchase the foam lined cover for the passenger side since i did not want to fill it up with foam because there are fuel and other lines in there. As far as dynamating the car or using b-quiet or whatever.. not sure, but from what i have read it did not add a lot (i guess specially to S4+ since they are already soundproofed heavily at the factory). I think i will do more to the door and rear wheel archs inside the car, i hope that adds a little more.

P.S. don't worry about Tarek... he can sniff a gallon of lead... since i have a feeling he is middle eastern and i know we still have leaded fuel there (they did not introduce lead free till a few years ago!!!!)

I have considered adding sound deadening on my 84. I have heard of using expanding injected foam, large foam weatherstripping, dynamat, etc. Has anyone got any details of how they have used such methods and how happy they are with the results?
Thanks,
Dave McK.

If you use expanded injected foam you want to be absolutely sure all the metal surfaces you use it on are well coated. I have seen too many cars where the roofs and pillars and such were filled with expanded foam and the foam trapped moisture which literally ate the car from the inside. Most new cars with such foam used as an insulator/sound deadener clearly state not to replace it when doing a repair for this very reason.

Not sure of the relative merits of all the possibiliities, but after becoming a 10 minute expert on the 'net I went with BXT RAAMmat & ensolite.
Service was great, Rick was very helpful and responsive. The material still sitting in the box so no results to post. I want to do a pre and post installation comparison with a decibel meter, but don't hold your breath for that.

Thanks for the caution. The reason lead-based is considered dangerous, is because children lick paint off window sills. It is really no more dangerous than grease or fuel. Just don't soak you rbody in it or eat it as a snack.

I work in the X-ray industry and we use lead to block radiation... If handling lead is harmful, I have bigger problems than exposure to my car's soundproofing...AND there would be a logical explanation to my personality

My plan would be to paint the lead on one side, and cover it with carpeting, in order to eliminate direct contact.

But hey, in case of fire, it'd make a nice pile of solder, molded to the shape of the tub!!

The most effective sound deadener that I have ever seen was some heavy foam rubber sheets that contained a high percentage of lead flakes in the foam. It was made to quieten line printers back in the day...

Hey Doc,
I think I read somewhere that the toxicity levels in the brain are exponentially proportional to the numbers of cars we own

As for foam pieces, I can use 2 sets of driver/passenger if you still have them

Nah, that is 'stress' levels are exponentially proportional...

Be a man about sound deadening... just look at Constantine, he drove all the way from Fl to NC for a SITM in his racecar, and w/o AC. Now that gets a double

Tarek, I'll bring some floor foam with me when I come for Sebring.
