Well, I've never used SEM so I can't comment on the product quality. However, I can comment on Leatherique having used it for several years. if you have those type of problems, you are doing something wrong with the prep. As you mentioned with the SEM product, the prep for the Leatherique is far more important than the finish coat. I did the same process as you described, and I've had Leatherique on several cars for more than three years, in frozen Colorado, and buring sun of Texas. It reacts just like other dyed leather that has been taken care of correctly.
If you don't prep well, or don't use rejuvintor(the smell is not a problem for me, and it's not strong) you will have problems. Read and follow the website instructions, and it'll behave fine. The only caveat I have with it, is the application. I tried everything, but was only happy with airbrushing several thin coats, followed by a rejuvintor coat, and follow up every six months. Same maint with any leather.
SEM looks like a good alternative, but I've head the price is somewhat higher. If it's only a small job, that cost isn't a factor, I guess.

I remember discussing this with someone at sharktoberfest and couldn't remember who, so hopefully they are watching and can pick up the details from this thread.

So you're only talking here about dyes (SEM vs Leatherique) right?
What about reconditioning stiff leather? Does SEM make something that's equivalent to Leatherique's Rejuvinator Oil and Prestine Clean? Is it better?

you dont have any paint smell?
i was noticing today when i get in my car there is a leather smell. one that i love and always associated with ferrari's and stuff with full leather interiors. I dont want to loose that. I guess though if you pull the front and rear seats out prep, paint, and let air out for awhile there is no reason they should carry the paint chemical odor with them into the car.

JP sent me some of the Classic Grey. I did my steering wheel 6 months ago and it still looks excellent.

good to know heinrich and Randy, i was curious about this thread cause this guy was pretty adamant that leatherique is crap, and thats the first person i have really heard knock this stuff. No doubt "weissach" may have some interest in SEM.
As for purchasing SEM stuff, is it me or does everyone else think its just a real pain in the *** to call up, find a supplier, then have some guy working out of his mobile business come by and sell you the stuff. Thats the feeling i got of purchasing this SEM stuff. I just want to call up, place the order and have it on my door within a week. I dont want to have to deal with calling up a bunch of people and finding the right guy that services my area and go through all that crap. They need a better distribution model to follow.
