Okay... I looked at Matt's picture again. He's right. The spring does hold the pedal up until you pass the fulcrum, then it assists you.

I had the same thing after replacing my master, in the morning the pedel would be half way down, I would pull it up with my foot. Drive it for a little while and it would stay up. Once the clutch was bled in both directions, down and up, it held up great. Porsche shop did it, so don't ask for specifics. I have an 89 S4.
