Happy New Year!
Getting ready to remove the mechanical fan on my MY85. Found a great fan controller for electric fans from Flex A Lite that will run fan from 60% to 100% speed depending on sensed temp. One connection is to a 12V ignition switched source. Is there a readily available of a switched 12V, 12V when in run position, source under the hood, trying not to have to run wire from passenger compartment to the controller.
When installing my electric fan I decided to use a constant +12V instead of a ingnition switch depended one. This way the fan can run even after the engine is turned off. This is better for the engine since alot of the heat will be removed and heat soking will be minimal. If you still decide to use an igniton dependent +12V use can always run it off one of the coils. This will nto effect the coils performance casue the power wil only be used as a trigger.
Oh yeah, as far as an underhood ignition source, I just run one from the fuse panel. I don't believe there is much of anything under the hood that works properly as I will not tie them into the coils.
Hi Glen,
There is a grommet under/behind the dead pedal. Remove pedal, fold back carpet a little there is an oval piece of soundproofing. Peel that off and you will see one or two rubber grommets each with two or three nipples. Cut one and you can push a wire through into the area behind the rear panel in the driver's front wheelwell(by the cruise control tempostat).. Several tubes and wires then go to the engine compartment from there, your new wire can follow along.

Hey now, I stopped drinking about 3AM - have not started up again.
Thanks for the info - right now my 4 fans from the murph kit are wired to a switch in the cabin. Works fine but I was thinking about having them be temp activated.
Thanks for the replies. Dave Lomas has the link to the Flex A Lite fan controller. I bought it at Jegs.com web site. The 12V switch source is just to the controller, it is programmed to run on after the ignition is switched off. The feed for the fan will come from the jump terminal. Thanks for the tip about the grommets behind the dead pedal, did not know about them. I will probably do that, pick up a feed from the fuse panel.
I was going to guess Summit...but Jegs will do as well. My Edelbrock electric choke (accessory for a 750cfm performance carb, for a 340 Dart)...is very specific NOT to use the 12V switched power feed to the coil, as a "source" for the electric choke. One can only surmise, that this will cause ignition troubles. Not to worry though...as Ketchmi has pointed out...a "switched" 12V source is as close as the fuse/relay board...just be sure to use an appropriately sized "inline" fuse for your Flex-A-Lite fans, and all will be well
