Default Finally..the PICS of the 928 that has been sitting for 10years..thoughts?

Gang - You might remember I posted a few weeks back that I came across a Genuine Euro (yes it has the "ZZZ" in the VIN) 1985 928S.

Well I went to photograph it today, please tell me what you guys think based on my pics.

I am going to test drive it tomorrow and will let you know how it runs, supposedly it is very powerful BUT has an initial hesitation when you first step on the gas pedal, almost like something is holding it back and as you increse the throttle position then it suddenly goes.

Confirmed it is a 16V car and not a 32V (sadly!) but a 5speed none the less

My observations...:
1) Why two wings on the rear hatch?
2) Interesting white leather, even white leather inserts on the door
3) No rust...couple of small dents...
4) Mileage much lower than I thought..67,909miles..engine bay reasonably clean and seems like alot of space to work (compared to my 930!)
5) Dash is lifting and cracked
6) Two leaks under engine, looks like the P/S pump and could not identify the other....
7) When I had inflated the tires they all cracked...so it needs new tires at a minimum!
8) Alot of little interior trim pieces have fallen off.
9) No cats on the car.
10) Front black chin spoiler completely broken off car, but the ends remain, probably happended while towing it at some point.

Needs a GOOD scrubbing for sure...and truck fulls of TLC!!

Looks like I can pick up this car for "around" $5,500. Is it still a good buy?

Well here are the pics - please tell me what you think gang:

Have a PPI done with a leak down. I don't think the seats are original, but are recovered. I hope you can do your own work. If not this could be an expensive project. If it has been sitting for 10 years it will need new tires, tune up, timimg belt (inspection or repair), major tune, and a couple of hundred $ in switches, etc. Check to see if there is battery compartment rot. Good luck, it could make a nice $7500 car!

Need more information:

1. What are you going to do with it?

2. How good of a mechanic are you?

3. Ultimately, how much money do you want to spend on an '85 928?

Looks like it needs some work. A hesitation on one of these can be tough to solve, and those aren't the original seats.

-$5500 seems rather low to me for some reason; a thorough PPI is in order I think...

N!

The '85 - '86 ROW cars seem to be popular - good power, fun to drive, last of the "S" body style.

Any used car is a gamble, but if you are willing to do your own repair/restoration work, it could be a good gamble...

If nothing else, the parts are worth more than that, if you are willing to sell it piecemeal.

Nothing sad about that, the euro S2 is very tough to beat!!

Body and paint looks like it would shine up nice. I have seen many worse engine bays on daily driven examples. If you want to work on it for a while and buy some parts go ahead. (5 speed) Do the TB/WP, replace belts, fluids and sensors. Clean all ground points and replace vac hoses and tighten cables. Do the above and hesitation should be history.

I had my EURO out last night and there is very little that can touch a good one. Cool factor and usable power are almost unlimited!

Couldn't that be an early '85 that has '84 style seats? It's not very common for a 928 to have seats swapped out.
That's a great car(!!!), but obviously can absorb a lot of money and time to get to a point where everything works and looks great.

Those are a good car and the price seems reasonable. Also consider you could find an S4 in need of work in that price range.

That is the nicest 16V engine going. I'd really watch the clutch and trans in it to make sure it is good...that and engine seals...head gaskets do tend to leak out if the car sits like that for a long time. You could easily be looking at putting $2,500+ into it to bring it up to spec, but even then it is a good deal.

The seats are a mystery because the padding is definately 928, the side bolsters are sport seat like but the 928 has a lever and not a button to release to move forward. The interior is sharp and if i got this thing I would pull the engine and make it look better than showroom.

Shined and refurbished this could be one of the nicest sharks going. Guards red 5 speed euro with that color interior is quite a find! Add some DR 19's.

I often wondered how one of these engines would take to 10 psig! It could spell 650 crank HP with the right turbos.

This winter I'll be building a 4.7 Euro twin turbo motor that will be fed by L-Jetronic. We are expecting that engine to make somewhere around the 475-500 crank HP mark.

Gang - Thanks for all your quick feedback! I am a very competant mechanic and have been wrenching seriousely for well over 10years now. I do all my own work on my 930 (now there is tough car to work on!) and have even had a few cars featured in several magazines over the years. Working on this car does not intimidate me.

I understand that the car will take several grand to make it nice, driveable and reliable. Tires alone will set me back $600.

My intent is to use it as a driver to work a few times per week and use it as a fun car.

The price is low as the owner wants to off load it really quickly as he is an older (very eccentric) gent and his wife has been barking at him for ages to get rid of it, she wants to use the $$$ to buy windows for their house!

Test drive will be this afternoon! Wish me luck!!

I like the optimism but at 10:4:1 compression - 10PSi may just blow the heads off.

DR is starting R&D on a supercharged version on that very same motor.

5.5K ??? - Its worth it if the PPI checks out.

If its been sitting for 10 yers - the fules system needs to be gone through - the T/B and distributor belts ared do for a change. Right out of the box - you have close to 400 dollars in parts alreday (Belt/H20 Pump/rollers/bearings etc ..)

But it is a 5 spd.

Good Luck with her. And if it doesn't work out for you - please send me the contact info

Happy New Year

Check carfax. I don't think this car has sat 10 years, I think the PO had the seats replaced and installed replacement things like S4 wing and S4 wheels. The car looks pretty clean but the older seats concern me as do the add-ons, may mean the car was partially restored. Make SURE the odo works. those miles are low. If it were me, I'd look at the tbelt too, it may be a new one and then you'd know it hasn't sat 10 years. Is it Auto?

yes yes almost every 928 I've bought, this story was the one they liked to use.
