Two rear wheelhouse liner questions
Hi All,
I have two questions about 928 rear wheelhouse liners,
1.Are GTS rear wheelhouse liners metal or plastic?
2.Does anyone with an 85-91 928 have a rear section of liner on the passenger side between the r/r tire & the fuel tank?
I'm installing GTS quarter panels on my car.(paid for by Insurance) After removing the old panels, I found no rust at all under my l/r quarter, & it had wheelhouse liner section both in front & rear of the tire. My r/r quarter has substantial (but not fatal) rust all along the lower edge of the quarter glass & at the area above the r/r tailite. There was only a liner section in front of the r/r tire but not between the rear edge of the tire & the fuel tank. No rear section is shown in the parts catalog either. The GTS has full rear liners shown. Did Porsche learn something or is the catalog wrong?
Thanks in advance, Hammer

GTS liners are some plasticy stuff with a thick foam backing. unfortunately they are both very expensive to replace and break down over time (become brittle and crack & break up).
A better quality replacement would be nice - several have sugested fiberglass - although personally that would seem to have some of the same brittle issues to me....
No idea on the earlier versions format although others have fitted GTS liner versions to earlier cars I believe...

If anyone has some old rear GTS liners/pieces I could use as patterns I could fabricate them from aluminum. I'm no stranger to metal fab. I priced the GTS liners & they're over $600.00 each. I guess they must be IMPORTED plastic.

FYI: My car has no wheelarch liner on the right rear nor any sign - such as bolts/holes - that one was ever fitted. I believe this is stock but I don't know why except that there's really nothing in there which needs to be protected.

Thanks guys,
I thought it was strange that there was no shield there, if only for fear that the tire could kick up something from the road that could puincture the fuel tank.

They started them with the 91's I think, but maybe the 90. I think road noise was also a reason they installed them

I always thought this was odd, as all that's protecting the gas cap areas is that little rubber boot, and you kick up all sorts of stuff all up in there.

My 1990 S4 has no liner fitter on the RHS rear, however there is a panel fitted on the LHS rear to protect the PSD system. When I wash my car I always hose out under the fender arches to remove any road grime and to date no sign of any rust.

Innerliner was added from 1992 when the GTS came on the passenger side.
All others are open as far as I know.
The reason why I added mine was to keep dirt out of the channel for the fuel lines.(and it only costed 20 USD ready to mount)
Mine was fully packed with dirt when remowing the fuel tank strap.
(plus that the rubber boot at the fuel filler was toast)

On my car the bracket that holds the plastic fuel 'compensation' tank had rusted off from the tire/water cast off & it was just hanging there by the hoses. Now I know what the mysterious knocking noise was from the r/rear of the car.

Excactly...the rust. It really does not matter if You have those wheelarch liners or not if You are using Your car during snowy winter's and that they are using salt (f¤¤¤¤¤¤) to keep the snow off the road as they do over here.
I am in the middle of taking my car apart and I was wondering about that right hand side liner also. Even where the liners are on, the rust is there. It is surface rust mostly, but on the brackets it is all the way trough.
I have alway promoted driving the 928 during winter because of it's superior handling....I have now changend my mind.
I have always hosed the 928 off with fresh water after driving in the salty conditions....but...behind the liners??? not that easy to reach.
So, when my projeckt is completed, the 928 will NEVER see snowy and salt roads again.
