Default 86 vs. 86.5

I bought an early 86, with a timing belt failure(don't park your shark in a gas station with a for sale sign on it) some how the belt failure became an event to the previous owner. Until this year, I had to put it off due to $$$$$$$. However I have read many, many articles most of them have 86.5. I know a 928, is a 928, is a 928! I am beginning to think the '86 is the "redheaded step child". Just an observation. After building and rebuilding early Corvett motors, then embarking on a "928" rebuild, anybody who has made the same steps knows the the feeling. I am looking forward to the challange of putting it back together. I'm sure more adventures are on the way. Oh yes I am aware of the mid year changes.

Good luck with your rebuild Bill. I too have an 86.5...and literally, youor car being in the first 1000 produced for the 86 model year, ia probably a bit "rarer", than the late 86s or 86.5 models...but it seems the later cars are more "sought after" by potential buyers, due to the mid year upgrades to S4 brakes and suspension pieces. You going to pull the heads with the motor "in the car" ??? Or when you sais "Timing Belt Failure"...did you mean some mechanical malfunction in the timing belt drive / roller / tensioner systems, that did NOT trash your valves ??

Bill think of your car as an '85. mid-85 to mid-86 had twin pipes; short plastic dipstick and the rest is same as '85. I've never thought of it as redheaded stepchild, I own 2.

Jeff, water pump, 2 intake valves, 16 exhaust valves and some more stuff. Hopefully the other stuff is mostly preventative maint. stuff. The " 1000" and the probibly a bit rarer seems to fit most all the toys that I have bought in the past. I would post pictures, however there are a lot of bent valve pictures about, the one I am waiting for is the blinking blue lights in "My Rear View? Just kidding. I have a friend on the State Police Force and with my luck it would be his "Blues" in the mirror.

As Ed Ruiz would say "Merry Motoring".

check out bigdave's site at http://members.rennlist.com/bigdave/index.html he recently rebuilt his 86.5 engine due to timing belt failure. The engine should mostly be the same.

Thanks guys, I've seen Big Daves site, it inspired me, after waiting 8 years to rip it open, it was just the "straw".
Heinrich, great perspective, the mid year sounds a lot like me, I am a mid year model and any other attributes would be just bragging, (ha ha ha) know what I mean.

Just Bill...if you have seen "Big Dave's" rebuild page... you probably already know and have the workshop manuals, but, if you DON'T already have the workshop manuals...BUY THEM...you can get them on CD, in "searchable" Adobe Acrobat pdf file format...You WILL find this CD to be the most indespensible resource (next to this forum...and I mean RIGHT NEXT to this forum)...you could have, for your project. Join the list...then you can upload photos and do lots of other stuff non members aren't allowed to do. Its worth the few bucks believe me. Anyhoo...a couple "special tools" are required to do the job you are facing (from an assembly point of view). Make sure you have them and "git er done"...

My apologies Bill...myself, as a pretty new "paid member"...am still getting used to the forum. I am truly sorry if I caused you any offense,

jeff, no offense taken. I am new to the forum. I do not have all my stuff together. I've been active on the web for only a few months, however I have been building a parts invantory for a while. When I see things like cd's for less than $100 and fisch for less than $50 it makes me swollow very hard after paying all that money for a copy of the "manual". I have been out of the 928 loop for too many years. As a rookie to the "list" I need to be aware of the protocals.

thanks again for your help

Even though you already have the manuals, there is enough other tech info in Jim's CD set to be well worth the small cost...
