Question Automatic door locking 1982 928S

G'day,

Before I sent the car in for a change of the timing belt my doors used to lock as soon as there was vacuum coming from the engine. When the engine stops the doors unlock. It's not happening now. The Porsche mechanic said he had not seen this before and did not know where to look. He believes it maybe part of the alarm system.

Do you know about this? Am I looking for a wire off a vacuum switch or am I looking for a vacuum line off?

Cheers from down under

Bob,
Welcome to the 928 board.

Both of my 1982 cars have power (as in electric) locks and not the older vacuum operated system.

Someone on here will know more than I, however are you sure they are vacuum operated.

Roger

G'day Roger,

I am sure the locks are electric. It is only the switch mode that seems to be vacuum as turning on the igition will not operate the locks. It only occurs when the engine actually starts.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Cheers

Bob,
Until someone else chimes in I will try and help.
As far as I know vacuum has nothing to do with the locks or alarm system.
Give me more detail on why you think vacuum is effecting the locks.
Are you saying that when you turn on the engine that the doors lock and when you turn it of they unlock?
Is the alarm aftermarket or original equipment?

My '78 would lock itself about 3 minutes after shutting off the engine. It locked me out with the keys still in it at the carwash once! To this day I keep the key in my pocket and won't leave it running without the driver's window down some.

The door locks were vacuum actuated up through '83, I believe.

Check the vacuum connections to the 4-way diverter off the brake booster. Also, check the vacuum check valve there.

Is your climate control system working properly?

Bob when you replace tbelt and water pump you invariably end up messing with other things. He probably found something wrong (check valve unplugged for instance) and fixed it

G'day Randy V,

In response the Climate Control is not working but it is out of gas and needs to be changed to the new refrigerant to meet our laws. Is there another problem with the aircon? I don't know.

I do not believe the locks are vacuum operated but in fact electric. The doors operate in all respects. The alarm resets after a couple of minutes automatically. The reason I think the problem is vacuum in the case of locking after start is if the ignition is turned on as if ready to start nothing happens to the locks until the engine is actually running ie vacuum is present.

Oh well it gives me something to do over Xmas and the coming months since I have been diagnosed with cancer.

Cheers from down under

Bob,
"I have been diagnosed with cancer" Sorry to hear that - I wish you a speedy recovery. Working on the 928 can be very therapeutic.

I would never argue with Randy
However both my 82 cars have electric operation of the door locks.

It could be something to do with an aftermarket alarm having a setting to lock and unlock the car in line with the starting of the engine.
The factory alarm system or the locking system did not do that.

Another possibility is the ignition switch could in someway be faulty.

Heinrich's point about something being disconnected is also very valid.

Good luck,
Roger

Well, sure wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong.

My former '79 definitely had factory vacuum-actuated door locks though.

78-79 are vacuum... 1980-89 are electric 928 locks , then the 1990> is a different electric unit

Holy **** I am sorry I had missed the cancer bit Bob. Listen, go to www.landsharkoz.com and you will find a LOT of Aussies into 928's. Ask them to come visit, have a beer (Fosters ain't beer Mate, neither's Castle or Lion). We have lost good 928 friends to cancer, just get with them and hang out over a beer and barbie, k? I lost 2 uncles to the crap and my closest friend. If you are gonna enjoy the 928, then do it now. There is a lot of help for you with tech knowledge and such. Go look up the site, mail Leonard Zech. He's been ignoring my Marble Grey photos for 2 years but he's a good man
