I have an 83 928s with a 84 euro engine which I love more than anything else. I purchased an aftermarket clutch from 928 developments (Stage2 http://www.928developments.com/clutch_928.htm ). We have installed it a few times and no matter what we can’t get it into 1st or reverse without starting in gear. 928 Development sent me a stage 3 to see if that would help while that one actually matched the spec disk width closer still no dice. We have bled the master/slave and checked everything, we think the Intermediate shaft could be a bit worn and may be keeping the clutch disks from moving forward enough to release from the pressure plate? Is this a common occurrence?
I have heard that the Kevlar disc expands some when warm so I still think that could be the problem too . outside of ordering stock discs to try out with my modified pressure plate are there any suggestions.?
If anyone has successfully installed the stage 2/3 perhaps you can provide some details of how to fix this issue?
Thanks
Sean

sean, i recently had a similar experience with my 86. i was using an uprated pressure plate from 928 motorsports and we tried everything to get it to release but no joy. finaly substituted in a used pressure plate and everything worked. ive spoken to carl and he confirmed that originaly they were using springs that were to highly rated on the pressure plate and had to use less stiff springs in production as they wouldnt release otherwise. ive sent it back for carl to have a look at and hopefully remedy.

Looks like Nick has some specific info on this.
Was going to say (and still am) that the dual-disc clutch is hard to get adjusted right and that intermediate shaft can cause the plates to stick. Next time you've got it out take a look. If there is noticable wear or especially burrs on the splines then it's go to be replaced.
As for the adjustment I've tried the official method, the "DEVEK" method and what works for me is the "crank 'em back" method. Just crank the adjuster all the way towards the rear. Maybe that's what it needs and maybe there's some self adjustment action.

yeah what glen said! but the dual disk clutch is noticably lite weight and works well when up and running. you can measure the amount the slave cylinder is moving to determine if the hydraulic system is operating correctly but if it was before then it should be now. if the only parts you are replacing are the pressure plate and driven discs then thats the most likely place for a fault.
