Its safe to say that 100K is just hitting its stride & 200K with still stock spec (or better) performance is expected! How many other cars do you see with 150K+ miles on a stock engine WITH A SUPERCHARGER! That is still a daily driver? Not many.....150K on a Vette or Ferrari is pushing it. Several of the baddest 928's out there are deep into the 100K's With some over 200K! With proper maintence and care the 928's will last a long time to come!

I think Bill Ball installed his SC with 145k on his odo. As I recall Andy installed an SC on a 200k Shark. If I wasn't selling my 90 GT eventually I would SC it without a second thought.

Mine has 273k miles and I have put 5k miles in the last 3 months. No problems or breakdown (knocking on wood!!!). I still hit 130-150 mph almost everyday day coming home and get an average of 20-22 mpg.

I have over 160,000 miles on my '86.5 and I just changed the oil and found ZERO metal on the magnetic plug. The oil had been in there since my trip to Pennsylvania last summer in August. It was dark but not very dirty. Mark at Devek says to expect a head gasket failure around 260,000 miles or so, and then I can rebuild the heads with big valves and put on a better exhaust system.
Of course, I have done some maintenance at Devek (or they did) and that's probably why it continues to run as it does. Several times last summer in one of the states besides California it saw a pegged speedometer (some guy must have stolen it and then returned it
), with no problems at all, and at least 800 rpm left to go. (kept hitting *$%&#$** birds)
I heard of a Mercedes with at least 1 million miles on the odo and driven daily.
There was one in a Mercedes ad a few years ago.
What Heinrich says about 911 engines is true. I can trash a 911 engine in no time at all. I've already done it more than once, easily. And 911s like to rev, with no torque at lower rpm. My 928 pulls from 1400 on up to redline; try that in a 911 and you'll be walking home in no time. This is the only P car to which I have done that, and it just keeps pulling through traffic effortlessly. The nice feeling is when it is at around 3000 in top gear and you just ease your foot into it, and it perks right up and away. A 911 needs to be shifted all the time.
I want to get some bucks and buy another 928 as a back up. Must have it badly.

147K on my 82...and it's a "runnin" car. That sucker enthusiastically jumps to life evertime I turn the key. I had to get it to that point due to PO neglect, even though the car had 73K on it 4 years ago. I LOVE that car and run the crap out of it most every day!!! It is best to have at least 2 928's. one Cherry Mama and the other a runner.
I think one of the reasons that the 928's last so long in the US is that the cars will never see the reason for what they were designed for. Flat out 50% of the time and 3/4 throttle the other 50% running for hours on end across the German country side. Even then, I think the cars tip 100K miles.
I get asked the question of what defines a high mileage 928 quite a bit. It's a hard question to answer, as the mileage in the case of the 928, doesn't have much to do with it's value from our perspective. Seems like anyone will tell you, if it is maintianed well, the only time an eyebrow would be raised, is if it is over 200K miles....MAYBE!

Mine has about 120K miles, but only 3k since the rebuild after the t-belt fiasco. The transmission is new, too so I figure mine's "born again"

200k miles is quite common in Europe. Much beyond that and cars get harder to sell. S4 with over 350k was for sale in German long time even though price was less than half of the 200k cars. Condition is more important than miles as lot less driven can be in horrible state and high miler may have had good home. Currently there is S with 254k for sale in Netherlands.

This is a great thread.
The observation that higher mileage cars are usually free from the common problems caused by sitting idle too long should be kept secret, so we don't lose that leverage in used-car-deal negotiating with non-Shark enthusiasts.
"Look, Mr. Sales-weasel, I'm not paying that much for an imported hoity-toity expensive-to-fix car because at 101,000 it's got, um, super-high miles and I probably will have to replace the unobtanium muffler bearings and everything! How 'bout you consider this low-ball offer?"
I dare to dream...

The muffler bearings are stainless.....the door hinge stops are unobtainium.......'course the sales guy won't know either of these things about your "sean car".....
Moral of the story....find a good one and keep it.

I've got about 225,000 on my 86.5. I've had the car for 13 years and it was my daily driver for 10 of those years. The odometer stopped working about 4 years ago at 201,324. The car starts instantly when you turn the key. Had the auto trans replaced two years ago, but the engine has never been opened. The car has been diligently maintained and I have over $35K in receipts to show for it. Just bought an '87 S4 w/84,000 miles and it drives like a new car. (Thanks to the p/o who was an absolute fanatic about maintenance)
I would have to agree that the key to keeping the car drivable for many miles is to simply drive it a lot! I had more trouble out of my 86.5 when it sat for 2 years, than when I was driving it 1,000-2,000 miles/month. The problem I have now is that I've got two of 'em to drive. Poor, poor me!
