My stepfather had several sports cars while I was growing up. The two most memorable have to be his pearl white 63 Corvette and his Black on Black early Jaguar E-Type. Both where stellar cars in ever sense of the word, and are probably the primary reason for my love of performance vehicles to this day.

Fast forward – having owned a number of vehicles over the years but not counting my 67 Barracuda & my 69 Firebird – most served me as mundane plain Jane daily drivers. But about 10-12 years ago I got tired of slapping K&N filter kits and cat-back exhausts on trucks & cars in a lame attempt at making those vehicles more than what they where. Tiring of that I decided I wanted to invest in a serious weekend project car. That turned out to be my British Racing Green 78 MGB. It was and remains an on going project that I still enjoy to this day. But while it was great on twisty rolling back roads - something was missing. Added to that with the growth of my family – I discovered that I really needed a serious 2+2 GT, a Classic Cruiser or even a Muscle Car with a rear bench seats, as my two little girls where always fighting over who got to go with me in the Roadster.

That in mind this year I started scanning the classifieds and researching on-line for something new and a little different than the norm. That’s how I came to know the 928, as just about everywhere I looked or sleeked advice kept pointing me towards the Shark. Now I’d always known that the Shark was a fine vehicle with an in your face persona and an awesome pedigree. But I didn’t know much about them, so I’d always turn away and kept looking.

But one day I took a ride in one, then another and finally another. I was hooked and ended up purchasing the first car I took out for a road test.

I grew up working on cars with my father in the driveway and backyard. Usually out of necessity. We used to swap the head on VWs as easy as changing the oil (awright, you get that end, 1,2,3, lift!).
Once we restored an old Fiat convertible that was literally a basket case.

While we were working on it I made some stupid teenaged comment about how stupid one of the design features was. He turned to me and said, "Every piece of machinery represents someone's very best effort".

I developed a real appreciation for design and mechanical things.

Then when I saw a 928 on the cover of some magazine in 1985, I was in love. I've always wanted one since (but never any other Porsche, for some reason).

This summer I finished adding a second floor to my house, and was looking for the next 'project' and I saw a 1985 928 on eBay for a reasonable price and here I am.

Seeing them around Seattle in the late 70s and early 80s peaked my curiosity. In my young mind the car was on the same exotic level as a Lamborghini Countach.

Then Risky Buisness came out and a few years later Weird Science. I knew some day I'd have one.

I had a few hours to kill on a business trip to Sacramento, took a test drive in the then new 944, and as I was about to leave the dealer I saw this beautiful white 928 parked next to the showroom, and half joking asked the salesman what it was going for. It was something like $25k and maybe 4 years old, and wow this is a nice Porsche I might actually be able to buy.

I started reading the LA Times classifieds, and looking around, and a few months later I bought a 81 automatic and my friend bought a 79. I didn't bond that well with the 81, the auto just made it too sleepy, but I did basically like it, even if we decided not to keep it. Owning another one with more go hasn't stopped rolling around in my head since, and two weeks ago I bought a 83 5 spd that I look forward to visiting between mechanics tomorrow.

My wife and I had taken our first vacation together in 1979 since the birth of our daughter from Texas to the Napa region wine country. We were staying in a hotel/motel in Napa, got up the next morning and there was a white 928 in the parking lot. I could not believe how beautiful the car was. I talked to the owners who had recently traded a 240/260/280Z car for the 928. I asked about the accelereration and handling comparisons between the two. I remember that the man just laughed and told me that there "was no comparison" I knew I had to have one.

Okay, my turn. I have been a car buff since I was probably two. My dad worked for Chrysler and drag raced when he was young (so I will blame him for my car obsession). When I was young, I loved muscle cars, and still do. I knew what engines came in what cars, horsepower ratings, etc.

When I was older, and I could afford a toy, I started with a '72 Satelite. A couple years later, I got tired of 4 wheel drum manual brakes, and I sold it. I toyed with other muscle cars, but was never quite happy. Good acceleration, but poor handling and braking. About 6 years ago, my dad mentioned that he saw a sharp looking Porsche for sale by his house (about 250 miles from me). It was a '73 911T with wheel flares and a turbo tail. It was priced right, so I bought it. It was fun, but ended up being a "basketcase". I have since bought a few other muscle cars and another 911, but never was completely happy. In a 10 year period I owned a: Satelite, Belevdere, Corvette, two Camaros, two 911s and a Challenger.

Last spring I sat down to figure out what car would work for me, that I would would keep for more then a year or two. I wanted a powerful car that was unique, handled well and has a backseat (I have kids). Other cars that were thought of: 300ZX 2+2 and 944 (or 951); but the 928 was the one. It to me is a muscle car with style and comfort. Last summer I bought my '83 928. Now I am just learning how to work on it, which is part of the fun.

When I was around 7 or 8, my uncle Carl had bought a '85 off the lot. It was the most neatest thing that I had ever seen in my life. I got to ride in it once and that car has always been in the forefront of my mind. The dream had kind got tossed to the wayside as I got a little older and into college. A year and a half ago I began to look on ebay for kicks and started getting the bug for one even though there was no way that I could afford one until after I graduated. Then a few months later I saw a 1985 US Auto on ebay that was in Dallas, I thought that this had to be some kind of sign because my brother lives in Dallas and could pick it up for me (, I am in BFE Mississippi) if for some reason that the Gods of Bwahh saw fit for the price to stay stupid low. It got down to a day or so before the auction was going to end and the bid was at 1600 bones or so, earlier I found out that Paypal would give me Paypal Buyer Credit for up to 3k w/no interest for 1 year (even though I made less than 4k/yr, go figure that one!). So I said "what the hell" I will bid 2500 and and hope for the best...Keep in mind the car barely ran (bad radiator, vacuum leaks, TC carrier bearing bad, nothing but the shifter post to shift with, etc...)... Well I took my laptop to class the next day as the auction was ending during that time. About 15 seconds before the auction was to close, I bid....As the seconds ticked down, I prayed....16 seconds later I was the owner and I exclaimed "hell yeah!" in the middle of the lecture, everyone eyes turned towards me with a strange look. "I just won a 928!" I told them. THey just shook thier heads as I grinned. This was last year right after Thanksgiving. With a bunch of time, about 500 bux, and a bunch of help from all y'all, here I sit w/a well running 928. Thanks y'all.

I have TRIED to own a Porsche for years but never got around to it. My 1st experience with a 928(besides models, mags & TV) was my friend Brendon who's father owned a blue on blue auto back in say 84/85. I was in the back seat(not bad) for a cruise to his house in PA from Pennington, NJ. The Butler was driving and he was like 70 years old flying through these twisties and then my head hit the roof....twice. We had gone over this whoopty doo at about 80mph and he looks at my friend and says "She handles great but does not get good air like the Mercedes(6.9)". I was hooked. Next time my friend's brother bought a Black on black checkerboard 78 5spd and gave us a ride doing about 110 in a 35 zone and we passed a cop but he did not pull out...too many doughnuts I guess. What a rush and I was driving I think at that point(1986?). I remember him saying that it cost him like $3k for a clutch job and his father OWNS an auto parts store...that blew it for me WelL I got bit again when my friend bought a S4 in black/black auto. I remember busting his chops about owning a Porsche with an auto until he gave me a ride. HOOKED AGAIN! Then I took my vette in or an exhaust and he was crying about his $1400 power steering pump and $900 alternator or some BS....BLOWN IT AGAIN!
Fast forward many cars and I still never bought one, came close a few times but I just remember" $3k clutch, $1400 PS pump, $900 alt, etc" so I wound up owning some nice cars like a 560SEC and a 560SL, E420, etc and realized Porsches are not that much more to fix than a Benz. Well my 2004 GTO lease is up in March so I have been looking for something cool but different and cheap because I own 4 cars and don't want/need a big car payment. Found this 82 at my parent's neighbors(70+ year old guy) that had 5 cars and did not drive this car 1000 miles in 5 years but put a lot of money in like Trans, AC. window motors, etc. Talked to his mechanic(928 lover/owner) and he gave her a clean bill of health along with my mechanic/friend. Not a leak, weap, broken thing and EVERYTHING works on her, just turned 77k. For what I paid(less than what people on E-Bay are paying for junk in my opinion) this is a great car for the $$. This will not be my last Porsche....just wanted to get my feet wet, just don't want to dive in with Sharks around ya know.

I was looking for a grand tourer for long distance trips. Initially had in mind something like a BMW 6-series, mid-series MB, or a Jaguar. In researching my options I ran across a comparison test that included the 928. Changed my mind on what I should be looking for.

I saw one in the paper two weeks later. Went for a look and test drive. Met my criteria for appearance and condition, only must-fix was the steering rack. Took it to the local 928 expert for a PPI and bought it the next day from the (deceased) owner's son.

There is a longer story, of course, but, essentially it comes down to: (See image below)

..can you imagine fitting this gear plus two sacks, two sleeping bags, and a tent, or even a pair of skis, in a mid engine car?

I wanted a high-performance car, but it also needs to be able to transport my gear, be it climbing gear or skis or whatever, because I use the car for trips where the main goal is not the driving.

Of course, in the Shark, the driving is also an adventure in itself, so the drive is not only a waste of time:

Life is really too short for driving boring cars!

Bought a 1991 BMW M5, that the wife said she would never drive (until she did!!!) It became her daily driver, and I took over her truck. By accident I noticed my 1990 GT in the local paper, and went to see it with $1000 in my pocket, just in case. The PO started it up (Tri -Flow exhaust) and I told him it was sold. Did not even drive it. Always loved these cars, but had never been up close and personal until now. A friend has a 911, but I like my car in a different way, and like I tell him when I hear the jokes, "it is a much a Porsche as a 911--who the hell do you think made it?"

My dad sold his M1 to get a new 928 in 85 while we lived in Frankfurt. It was incredible and I could aqueeze in the back seat.. I have always wanted one since. My first Porsche was a 73 911 carrerra I got in 86. It was beat to hell but only cost about $1500 since the dollar was kicking **** at the time. I had to sell it in 87 when I came back to the US for College. It would have cost more to federalize and ship than I originally paid for it. I had to settle for a 4 cylinder 1980 mustang coupe when I got back... Ouch. Not even a hatchback. Talk about not cool. Always said I'd own a 928 some day. Went the muscle car route first with a '70 Mach I Mustang (428SCJ). I finally have the time and a little extra $$ for a week end toy.

Quick Reply: How did you get into 928's?
