How did you get into 928's?

Grew up with sports cars... Mostly British stuff. Triumph's mostly. So, my first car was an '80 Triumph Spitfire 1500, shortly after I got that car in '82 my uncle bought a BRAND NEW '84 911 Carrera Cabrio. I was in my first year at Southwestern Univ and he lived less than 10 miles away and had two young kids that I would baby sit on a regular basis. When I would get there, he would give me the keys to the 911 and head out on a date with the wife in the Mercedes and I would pack the kids in the 911 and drive for most of the time they were gone...
In '90 I broke my back racing motorcycles but had been looking at and thinking about 911's again. Well, after the accident things went on hold for quite a little while as you can imagine.
In '96 I HAD TO HAVE another sports car. Wanted a 911 but the only ones with an automatic trans were the '90 and newer models and I couldn't afford those. The 944's were to slow and even more so with the automatic. Then I remembered a doctor in '92 telling me that he just picked up an '88 928 S4 and while his was a 5spd they also made them with automatics and they were AWESOME! He LOVED his. I saw it several times and while it was cool looking it was not over the top in anyway. Still classy and understated (of course they were building the GTS's by this time) but I had never seen one on the street that I could recall.
After remembering his words and his car I started looking in to 928's. Got a good one owner car and never looked back! I have 7 show quality 928's now and have had two others that were running cars till I parted them out! I just LOVE THEM!
BTW, the GTS's in particular still get tons of looks, and the guys up at the local Porsche dealership still LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the GTS! They fawn over the car when I show up! It really is amazing and surprising to most! In fact they were doing it again today and I talked them out of the keys to a new Cayman PDK and Panamera S to test those cars against the GTS! Cayman is tied directly in to your synapses but it MUCH to slow and the Panamera is really something to drive, but I'll keep the GTS just the same thanks! When they make a PRETTY 2 door version of the Panamera Kattie bar the door, that thing will be a BEAST and if not to over priced will sell like hot cakes!

Started Porsche owner ship with a 914. Was spending all my free time driving between work and classes in college. I finally got rid of the 914 because I didn't have a garage and the weather was taking it's toll on a very nice 914. Man, that was a fun little car to zip around town in.
After a got my first house with a 2 car garage, ie. room for junk and a car decided I needed another Porsche. I started looking for a 928 because I was spending a lot of time doing highway miles, OKC to Atlanta, Dallas, St Louis, etc. Never really a fan of the 911. Spent a little over a year looking and never found a nice one that grabbed me. So, bought a 88 944 Turbo S instead because I thought it would sell really fast when I did find a 928.
After 4 years driving the heck out of the 951S I was called by my mechanic about a really nice 90 928 GT in for a PPI. Ended up buying it from Jarrod Wise and sold the 951 even though the 951 was faster 60-100.

Always liked the 928 body lines. Had a 67 Austin Healey 3000 since 1976 and had done a complete restore in 1977. While working for a company in Austin, Tx, in 1993 my bosses admin's husband had a porsche shop in Austin (TPWS) and we all had gone out to dinner one night and she pulled up with her husband (Matt) in a black on black 85 928. looked great and sounded great.
I was hooked, amd started looking for a 928. In 1996, I was going to a British Day sunday at the MOT in Boston ( which I did every year to show my Healey) and was reading the Boston Globe Saturday evening over dinner and saw a classified ad for a 1989 928 for sale, 23K miles one owner. I called that evening and it was a dealer in Malden ( Baystate Motor sports) who had it and was waiting that evening for a flat bed to take a Viper out west for a client you had just bought it , so he said come on down to see it.
I got there ( in a heavy rain storm) and it was on the show room floor, absolutely beautiful. No paper work/receipts at all on the car, though! All the panel bar codes, tools, books, etc. I spent about an hour going over it and made a deal that night (pending a PPI). Price $25400. I called the local Porsche Audi dealer I dealt with for years with my Audis and they couldn't get me in for a PPI, but asked for the VIN and they'd check it out. Came back that they sold it in 1990 ( 89 leftover) and said if it had more than 20K they would be suprised as the owner very rarely drove it. Took it up a week later to the Porsche dealer after I had bought it for a check, and they gave it a clean bill of health and T-belt and water pump ( as the original was 8 years old).
Next day at British Day at MOT in Boston, I put a for sale sign on my Healey and sold it in four hours for $20K, so my 928 basically cost me about $5K. Still have it and it still looks like the day I bought it but now has 89K miles on the clock.
Been on the forum, since the old Porschefans days as well...

The first time I seen one......I was in love!!! I have always been a Porsche freak since I was a child but the 928 was my favorite of the BEST CARS ON THE PLANET!!!! Now finally after drueling over the 928 for 30 years I have in my garage. I loved my 924's and 944 but the 928s4 was always my dream machine.

growing up in the '60s, american muscle cars were the normal objects of lust in my area. a few friends went into trades and immediately got big block muscle cars.... sigh... I worked/borrowed my way through college driving a car that looked and drove like it survived a demolition derby.
years pass and I finally graduate college and get job. a few more years pass and now ready to buy a 'real sports car'. briefly considered a corvette, but eventually fell in love with my '85 911 targa. I have owned this car twice and on second round began DE and stepped on the edge of the performance upgrades slipery slope. I love this car, and now more track than street.
but could never forget the growl of a V8. by this time the V8 growl would HAVE to come in the form of a 928 for a semi DD. got my '84 928S just over a year ago. last winter did some required maintenance. I love this car too!
two very different, GREAT cars.
928 is heading for a friend's garage with a spare lift to start work on the BIG box of parts I got from Roger over the winter. shocks, MM, oil pan gasket, fuel lines, windshield washer pump/hoses, and some other minor stuff. then attack the AC leak in the spring.

James, not to hijack the thread, but here is a pix of the Healey with my daughter ( about 4 then) sitting on "daddy's red race car".
British sports cars still have a soft spot in my heart as well.

Very nice Healy.
Well, getting into them was easy, random classified ad and recollection of seeing (and hearing) one 20 some years earlier. 45 minutes and $4500 later I was an owner.
Question now is how to get out. Spiraling obsession. No clear exit strategy.

Something about flying through town in 928 with a hooker in the front seat and a raging pimp on my tail in his Cadi just stuck with me. However, I never plan on being a U-Boat commander.
A V8 powered Porsche is just something you can't resist.
