What is the difference between the pre '86.5 tierod unit 928 347 331 01 and the post '86.5 version .... xxx 07? Is it that the outer ball joint is different ... or the length of the inner tie rod shaft? ... or something else?
The very early racks were 795mm vs 810mm; however that difference appears to be compensated for by a spacer fitted between the inner tie rod and the rack end itself. I've an old rack and odd parts that are about to be opened for exploratory surgery. If the patient survives, I want to know what it takes to target a 32v vs 16v complete assembly.

Lemme try this angle .. or dimension: I have inner tie rod ends that measure 244mm from the face of the socket that screws into the rack to the end of the threaded pipe where the lock nut jams tight ....
Is that a pre '86.5 part, or S4 type? ( apparently one ball joint outer end p/n fits all years, according to PET).
And if any knows, what is the length of the other type inner tierod?

I would suspect they are different lengths becasue some of the gt/gts race cars run with earlier lower control arms to get the camber they want. That's about as far as I can help you. Sorry.
