FWIW, my shifting is alot firmer when I use Mobil-1 synthetic ATF. I changed back to semi-synth Chevron ATF last change to smooth out the shifting.

Wally's recommendation of visiting with Steve Cataneo is spot on. IIRC, he's in Mass someplace. If that memory is good, consider getting the car don to him, and let him put the gauges in the trans to make sure that the pressures are correct. There's a section in the WSM dedicated to diagnosing shifting issues based on the control pressures. I wouldn't be real interested in doing a whole lot of adjustment to the trans without visiting those control pressures on the way. Many times, well-meaning folks will just dial in a few turns of the modulator, for instance, without researching why the adjustment is needed. Might be OK, but... Sometjhing in the trans has changed to make an adjustment necessary. Considering the $$ involved in any rebuild, it would be worthwhile finding out now if it's just a ball of fuzz in the valve body.

Keep us informed on what you are doing and what gets done to the car, please.
