Question 245`s on 7" wheels on S2 ?

Hi ALL,

I am putting on 2 new rear tyres on Thursday and at the moment I have...225/50 x 16 all round.

The tyre place also have in stock Falken 245/45 x 16 but dont know if they will be safe as I only have 7" wheels both front and back.

Is anyone running 245/45 x 16 on 7 inch rims please ?

Or any opinions ?

I would like the extra width but i dont fancy them rolling off the rims at 150 plus

I already have a new pair of FALKEN 451 225/50 X 16 on front.

All the best Brett

The minimum rim width is 7.5 inch to 9 inch maximum for a 245x45x16 tire. Pinching in the sidewall to mount on a 7 inch rim results in very poor handling not recommended at all. Bigger is NOT always better.

Thanks Jim,

I had a nasty feeling someone would say that

I will have to look out for some 8" or 9" wheels for the rear for next year when ive worn out these new tyres...225`s

Would you happen to know if 8 " or 9" will fit under the back of a UK S2 without rolling the arches ?

Also do they do the standard slots like mine in 8" and 9" ? as I like the original style.

Also i see in a lot of pictures on this list that your US slots seem to have a mirror finish ?? Is that a different slot wheel to my ally ones or can mine be refinshed like that ?

Many thanks

Brett

There is ample room on the rear of all 928s for a 10 inch rim with the correct back spacing , the 9 in rims are obviously very easy to fit . The S-4 rear 8x18 slotted forged wheels fit nicely (you may have slide on rear spacers common in 1985-1986 with longer wheel studs) but the 8 should still fit even with the spacer. I think Hoosier states that their race tire 245x45x16 can be mounted to a 7 inch rim up to 9 inch with a 8 inch rim used for all the dimensions listed as mounted. Many of the S and S-4 wheels in the US are chrome plated but also may be polished which looks good BUT unprotected aluminum corrodes rather quickly. The factory finish is anodized the satin finish and is quite hard but somewhat porous and easily stained.

Brett - I previously ran 8" slots on the rear of my '85 EURO with the 245's AND spacers with no problems. The 8's were standard on the S4 and should be easy to find at a resonable price. If you were in the states - I could hook you up @ abour $100/wheel. (I have WAY too many sets of tires/wheels! like 8 SETS at last count...9 if we count the truck!)

JB - Are these wheels 7" or 7.5" ? (My previous 84 S2 Wheels)

I did post the pics of my track shark with the spent hoosiers on them but I pulled them thinking I posted them in error (Wheel Width)

For those of you who didnt see the pics (no big deal) - Here they are.

Thanks!

7.5??? Check 944/951 on that one.

I bought a set of Falken FK451 Betas: 225/50/16 and 245/45/16 for 7" and 8" rims. The difference in tread patch width between these two sizes on this model are ALMOST IMPERCEPTIBLE. Lying the two tires on the ground, you have to look very very closely to see which is wider. If I recall it was like 1/4 of an inch.

Other tires I have owned were visibly wider. I would guess that if you were to ever push the envelope on tire size 245 for 7" wheel, this Falken might be a good candidate. On the other hand, I was told that Falkens have a strong sidewall. Not sure if this attribute would help or hinder tire fitment.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the replies, I think i will stick with the 225/50 x16 FALKENS all round until i find some 8 or 9 inch rear wheels, although I am tempted by the 245s i have a rather nasty feeling that at 150 mph plus I wouldnt feel safe
Also at THAT speed id feel an idiot as the tyres rolled off the rims and I was heading for the Armco ,,,,thinking .....well the Rennlisters were right lol

All the best Brett

The width measurement stated on tires 225 ,245, 275 is the mm of the WIDEST part of the tire the width of the bulging sidewall and NOT the tread width and is always based on a "standard" width rim for a tire of the "size" . So actual tread width for a 225x50x16 can vary between tire companies. The instability of a too wide tire is apparent under hard cornering. The sidewalls pinched in at the rim allows the wheel to shift sideways and the inner sidewall actually can lift part of the tread off the road under extreme sideloading. Many racing organizations do not limit tire width they only specify wheel width partly because of the problems of where to measure the tire. So competitors are free to run any size tire they wish on the restricted wheel width with the result being those who opt for too wide a tire simply go slower due to the poor handling in the corners.

I have 245/45/16s on my front 16x7 phonedials(16x8s in the rear). I noticed no negative affect on handling at all.

Perhaps im just lucky, i dunno.

This is a link to a very interesting site which includes a "Rim Width Calculator" as well as a load of interesting tyre and wheel info

Paul - great link. I learned a bunch!

According to that bloke...

I ran 245's on 7-inch rims, but they looked a bit odd, and the rear seemed a bit more loose. I now have 245's all round on 8" rims, and it looks sweet, and handles amazingly*, but the fronts do overhang the fender by a few mm's.

*And I don't lock up the fronts with emergency stops anymore.
