I have run across what the owner calls an 86.5 with a 32v engine/auto. The car is in fair to good shape outside, interior very good with 76k miles. 3rd owner with the currrent having owned for 10 years. Some records owner does own mtce items. Are there some specifics I should check. Belts, water pump, etc done at 60k. Any estimate on value? I know i should get a PPI and i can probably drive the car several days weekend to weekend. Thanks for any input.

Depends on a lot of things, but a 86.5 with all or most maintenance done and most or all things working electrically, with paint in fair condition will usually run between $6500 to $9000. It would have to be exceptional to go beyond that.

Thanks Shane. good news for me. i'm planning to sell my Fat boy and buy another pcar. The 928 is a model I've never owned and I have a thirst to try one.

I have previously owned an 86.5. As always, my disclaimer is that I'm not a wrench, but...
I'd ask who did the timing belt/water pump and make sure new tensioners were also installed.
Check for electrical issues. These tend to be fairly common on 928's and can sometimes be exasperating to chase down.
You might also have someone check for flex plate movement at the front end of the torque tube since it's an AT car. Too much forward movement of the flex plate can indicate impending thrust bearing failure which is a disaster.
Also check CV axles.
For an 86.5, 76K miles, with a fair exterior and very good interior - and presuming there are no obvious mechanical issues - I'd figure on paying somewhere in the neighborhood of $7,000 + or -.
And then plan on another $3-4,000 to spiff up items you'll discover after driving it a few weeks.

...Oh, and then, before long, you'll want a total re-spray. Then you'll want a new interior... Then a supercharger... Then, of course, you'll need wider rubber to handle the supercharger...

You can call me, I'm in Acworth. At one point my next 928 was be a 86 1/2 auto. So I had researched a lot about that year. If tommorrow's not too late, after 7pm 678-290-7886h, 678 b576-5399c. Good luck Ed M

Don't forget a pre purchase inspection from a wrench that is familiar with 928's. I can recommend one in Alpharetta if needed.
I think a well cared for 86.5 is the best of breed. I still miss mine.

Even though my car was in good shape when i got it, "little things" inevitabley go bad here and there ...and it adds up quick. The price of having a nice 928!
