outstanding..thanks!!!
Now for the question. I have an 87 and and 88 S4. They both have an RMB, but the 88 sounds better ( louder ). The only difference between the 2 that I can see is that on the 88 the resinators ( I guess that's what they are..the 2 flat pieces that connect the pipes ) towards the back of the car are exposed like yours are here. On the 87 they are covered up by larger pieces of metal ( belly pan?? ).
Would this cause the sound difference? I am sorry I don't know all the correct names for everything, but I am trying to learn.

Any pics of the rear pan? I've never seen one.

I strongly suspect that the difference that you have noted is that the '87 has the "S4" resonators and the '88 has the "GT" resonator pair. The latter are pictured on Georges car, and are the smaller, lighter pair in the photo below. ..... leaving the larger, heavier, more ( noise) restrictive pair as the "S4" ones.
I presume that what you refer to as a 'cover' is actually the larger resonators ... and they certainly tone down the exhaust music - too much.

Take a look at the pre mufflers (after the cats before the RMB)....are they the same size/shape on both cars? Its possible the 88 has smaller pre mufflers?

Yeah, those are the ones I am talking about. I didn't have time to take pics last night, but there is a difference in these pre mufflers that causes a lot of sound difference. I want to change the ones on the 87 to get better sound. I am on the wait list for the new "X pipe" from 928 Specialists, but also want to change those sorry mufflers just before the RMB too. I still will post some pics of the difference between the two soon.

Well, as it turns out Garth S was 100% correct. The 88 has the GT resonators and the 87 has the S4 resonators. It's dark outside, but I took a flashlight out and checked it out. WOW, what a difference in these things.
Another question. How can I replace the S4 resonators with GT ones or with straight pipe? Do I have to replace the ENTIRE system from behind the cats or can just the resonators be unbolted and replaced???
Also, how did an 88 S4 end up with GT resonators? They appear to have been there always and not like a part put on later.

Which cars got which after '87 - '92? - often, just luck: my '88 had the heavy units pictured and were replaced with the 'GT' resonators .... ~1/2 hour to switch over.
