I like the idea of the lights, but its seems to be a sensitive area of the 928 design to alter. My eye is too drawn to the changes.

What about keeping the headlight as a pop up, but making it a much smaller bit that pops up via the projector style lights? Something low and wide with maybe two lights side by side, raising up maybe 3" from flush.

DR sells an HID kit.... I am not sure if they have the same problems as the halogen replacements they tend to blow when the lights are hot and you retact themmm obviously this is a problem for pop up setups...

Porken, are you satisfied with your setup?
Is there anything you would do differently?
Do you think it would be beneficial to cut the lip inside of the fender opening to get the bulb to sit a little higher?
I think they are an 1" or 2 too low for US standards. They look OK, but they might have a little clipping of the side fill.
Yes. I would like to have high beams in the bumper area, though.
I would like to have a solid lower cover, painted body color.
Not really. There's a cutoff inside, so the beam only comes out of the top 1/2 of the lens.

Two 50mm lights fit in the popups, but if you're going to keep those, you might as well go with 8" H4's. Plus, the highs are only available in HID ($900!), unless the lows could modified to remove the cutoff.

Paul Jager and i were talking about that and after looking into it he determined it would be very hard to make it work...

You've done a lot of cool things. But those lights just look weird. Is the weight obsession getting out of hand? Do you wear the lightest clothes and shoes when in the car? Only put just enough gas to get to where you're going? I think the concept of dimishing returns has come into play big time.

You should strip all the paint and just do a thin clear coat over the bare metal, that'll shave some weight. NASCAR guys used to just drill holes in anything solid. I'm sure the gearbox and engine block have a lot of extra metal you could grind off. You've never mentioned what you weigh? I assume you're very lean, jockeylike perhaps.

Actually I don't know why I am concerned, only time I pop up the lights I can't really see them since its dark.

The factory setup pivots near the front and rotates up about 75 degrees to fully face forward.

I was thinking, move the pivot back almost centered on the headlight, so just the top 3 inches or so ended up above the fender. Kinda leaves a hole at the front though, wasn't a deep thought.

Scott, I like to modify a car for the maximum performance possible and it's known that weight is very important. My car is an obbsesion in the way my wife likes to read Nora Roberts books or someone might practice their golf game, my car is like a blank canvas to me and I don't care what you or anyone else thinks about what I do with it. I also don't care about whatever hobbies you might pour your time into and certainly wouldn't want to be an *** by critisizing you for it.

Shaving ounces here and there might be out of hand for a street car, but 20 pounds at the polar ends, especially the front in a front-engined car, is a very large weight reduction. The 928 is a pig; if I had one for a street car, I'd take a bunch of weight off of it, too.

Don't take any offense..*tongue in cheek*...but how about this...you lose twenty pounds...you look better...and the 928 still looks great...with the old lights...deal?

For weight savings this is a great idea, it will allow for removal of all the additional brackets which are rediculous.

For street cars it becomes a matter of personal taste. I actually love the pop up headlights, very unique and adds to the car. Lighting is also enough IMHO. It would be nice to figure out a way to keep the seals in the standards lights from going bad. Mine have a slight haze to them which makes them look old even though the lense is in excellent condition.

So what ever happened with this project? I may be finally picking up my 928 this coming spring, and I'd like to know what you ever did with this... (I know I PM'd you like 2-3 years ago about it, but I was a young naive college student who underestimated the cost of things then...)

Thanks!

I sold my '81, but I removed the projectors, covers, and brackets. I kinda miss the crisp blue light of the HIDs.

I've been eyeing my '86 for a suble way I could incorporate them, but keeping the 8" popups. Either replacing the silly US parking lights, or maybe put them in place of the turn signals. Then I could drive with headlights, probably most of the time, without using the big H4's.
