Got the car back today, runs like new again.

Turns out both fuel pumps where completely dead. I only had to pay for the intank pump and it's install since the external was under warranty.

Question: The 87 and 88 model S4's did not have an in-tank pump. They only have a screen in the fuel tank. Since the in tank pump is prone to failure and when it fails it kills the other pump, I'm thinkging about not putting the in-tank one in and buying the 87/88 model external pump. Anyone done that for the 89 through 95 models ? Any downside to this ?

I have to assume the P car engineers decided they needed an in-tank pump. I did hear some speculation that it was to insure no vapor lock to the external pump in very hot climates. The external pump would be force fed all the time. I haven't heard of fuel starvation in the cars without the in-tank pump so probably ok without it. Possibly a problem in some extreme cornering, or deceleration situation. I'm going to keep the in-tank pump, but I'll put a screen filter in the line between the tank outlet and the external pump inlet.
