Default Spark Plug Wires. Is there a difference?

While checking my spark plug wires this weekend I found that my coil wire was severly deteriorated. I started calling around to try to find some replacements and found a huge difference in prices.

The NoLogy wires seem to be the most expensive. I read that they have a capacitor built into the wire that supposedly allows the plug to fire with a hotter spark. Sounds like a good marketing campaign to me. These are over $350 for the set.

The Excell wires are guaranteed for life and are listed as "Original Equipment" in the parts stores computer. The clerk said that these are exactly like the ones that came stock. These are $169 for the set.

Does anyone here have any personal experience with these types of wire sets? I'm sure the Nology wires are good wires, but I have trouble believing that they're that much better. Your input will be appreciated.
Thanks

Factory wires are Beru (available in various forms from 928 Spec, 928 Intl, 928 Motorsports, or Mark Robinson). Nology's capacitor is just a marketing gimmick, but they look good (928 Spec carries and uses them). My choice will be Magnecor when wires get to the top of my to-do list (Motorsport in Utah carries them). People have tried various other wires including Cadilac Northstar wires, Northstar brand wires, Excell generic kits, and I think Ford Motorsport generic kit.

You need to contact Mark Robinson as he was selling the correct set of wires for about $90.
He posts on Rennlist. mailto:Porschesolutions@gmail.com
Ask him if he is selling them.
I and some of my 928 friends here in TX bought them and they were perfect.

I have used Magnecor for years. Before I had a 928. Very good wires. Check their website. They have several different levels. You can get them on e-bay for less than $200.00. I've used them on street cars & race cars. Highly recommended.

Are the ones sold by Mark Robinson a complete wire assy? I thought his were missing the end that fastens to the spark plug.

Correct they are the wires only. I assume you have all the connections.
Easy swop over. They are beru wires with the correct terminations to screw directly into your existing connectors.

I was going to replace everything. How do beru connections come off of the plug and cap? The reason I ask is that the plug side looks a little odd and the side that goes into the distributor cap was stuck like a ****. I ended up ripping the insulation trying to get that boot off. Is there a trick or were these just stuck because they were original and old?

It probably matters very little but I went with 8mm wires and stock Beru conectors from Performance products.
Fyrebraid Wires

You can save $40 and skip the 1400*F shielding and just get the Heavy duty wires (also with stock Beru connectors) with plain old silicone jacket that is good to 600*F. Heavy Duty Wires

I have both sets and like them both. Great fit, love the stock connectors, leaves no doubt about anything, also each wire is marked for the cylinder it goes to. Plus (yep there is more) you get two sets of coil wires.

I just went through the same debate. My Nology wires are toast, so I checked around and most sell just the wires and you put the OEM connectors on. They just un-screw from the old wires. Nology will sell replacement wires, but I know Mark Anderson uses stock grade wires on his 500+ HP race engine So, I contacted Mark Robinson and saved a lot He also sends the color illustarted instrctions for replacing the wires.

Use the "aftermarket" Berus. They last forever and we have never been able to deomonstrated any difference between them and Magnicor or Nology

We sell a few different types, but recommend the stock Beru. We use them on all our high perfromance engines.

You guys are spending $300+ on plug wires?

What's the cost of the "just wires" approach?

The Vitek wires look pretty good for $178 if you need it to include connectors, color choice & "1200 degree outer braiding". ie: here is the info on the ones for my 1985S http://www.vitekperformance.com/shop...?itemid=18078#

I recently bought stock from one of the big 3. IIRC they were $165, came with new boot/connector, marked for the correct cylinder. They are plane Jane. But it just isn't worth it to me for "color." YMMV.

We have the ignition wires made for us (so we can offer you a choice of silicone colors) and we use all-Beru connectors on both ends.

Available in Blue, Black, Gray, Neon Green, Red, or Yellow. 8 mm silicone outer over a tough fibre braid core. PLUS: every wire is wrapped with the correct cylinder number for easy installation!
