Default Shocks gone south

Has anyone tried removing the threaded sleeves from the original shock absorbers without going to a shop to have them pressed out? I live out in the sticks and am in pinch. I suppose three shocks are still better than two.

If the adjuster nuts still turn freely on the threaded sleeves, do not try to beat/bang/press the latter off the shock body - you will most likely destroy them.
Instead, whip out the hacksaw, and cut circumferentially around the shock body either side of the sleeve leaving 1/4" to spare on one side: CAUTION - if gas shocks, slowly make the first cut or drill a small hole to release the pressure. If you have large (plumbers) tubing cutters, it's even faster ....
Then, reassemble the hacksaw blade inside the cylinder you have recovered: carefully saw through the steel body - grip the 1/4" exposed tip and twist with pliers .... the shock body section collapses and falls out ....
