Dave, Yes, I bow to your superior collection of Tank Crap, much worse than mine...Mine was not (that I know of) exposed to unintended hazards like yours.

Purge time is coming soon! Thanks for the heads up on that. I'll do a complete purge with compressed air and kerosene before starting her up again.

This afternoon's work went by easier than I expected. The parts I soaked in simple green for the last couple of days came out and I cleaned them with a toothbrush. The sender unit's internal parts are still stuck, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel. I see where the float can be removed by sliding down on off of the metal guide column. I will do that and then sand down the guide column to get the rust off of it. Then resolder the sensor wires and do an ohm-meter check.

All threads are clean and appear to be OK. The tank itself, is in good shape with only a couple of nicks where the support harness was clamping it and the rubber shock strips wore away.

Success with the fuel pump. This is the first pump next to the tank. This 78 Euro has two pumps but both are external mounts. Anyway, I thought the pump was knackered since the first time I washed it out and blew an air shot through it little chunks of stuff came flying out.

I soaked the entire pump in kerosene fopr the past 24+ hours. I pulled it out of the bath, blew air through it until only dry air came out and then filled it with light lubricating oil -- about equivalent to a heavy kerosene or a 3-in-1 oil.

Question:

Has anyone discovered that with the fuel pump filled with oil, mounted securely in a vise, and with power first applied, will discharge a stream of oil about five miles long and splatter the entire front of the testing person's t-shirt?

Let me be the first one to warn you, when the pump "seems" dead, it is just waiting, like all mechanical devices, for the appropriate moment to come alive and mess with it's feeble human tormentor.

The pump is now running, hooked up to a circular flow of kerosene. It pulls kerosene in from one end and pumps it out the other end back into a bucket.

I am going to run the pump for 24 hours and see how it likes that! Spray me with gunk, will you!

Short story made long, it appears the fuel pump #1 is OK, at least is it running very quietly with a slight electrical hum, and pumping very forcefully.

I'll have pictures tomorrow.

Bubba the steam cleaning man comes tomorrow.

I going for a beer.

Cheers,

With the pump running, you might be able to check delivery rate is up to spec...1360ml/30secs or thereabouts IIRC, assuming its pushing through 6-8ft of 3/8 hose of course, and a filter first. When you get it back together, a good test is to bridge the pump relay and check for leaks.....then when you hit the starter, everything is primed and up to pressure.

OK, thanks for the info. I'll be testing pressure at each point in the reassembly. I use filtered kerosene. I noted that the pump after more than 24 hours of running wasn't very warm. Certainly not too hot to touch. The kerosene in the container (5 gallon plastic bucket was slightly warm. I imagine that the recirculation got rid of most of the electric motor heat.

I'm thinking that pump is ready for highway action.

Now on to the next pump.

Cheers,
