Alright, I'm a 964 owner that needs another Porsche like a hole in the head.
But, I've always like the looks of the 928 (and you know the rest of the sentence)...
I'm interested in an 85 or newer, Guards Red, manual transmission, excellent condition and documented service history (owner maintained is OK, I just want to know what's been done to it). I've seen the one on Willhoit's website, but I'm not interested in spending much over $20,000 on one. If anybody's got any interesting candidates, let me know.
Thanks very much,

For $20k, you should be able to get something VERY nice. I'd honestly consider buying an excellent example of an 86.5 for about $13-15K and spending the rest on inspections and maintenance that will have to be done right away. Also, if it is not so equipped you should check with the guys at www.928gt.com for wheels and some other upgrades.
Or for a little over $20k, you could try to talk me out of my '85 Euro S. Not likely, but it is Indisch Rot (same as Guards Red) and a five speed. They are harder to find than you think.

yeah, what tim said.... for 20k you could buy 3 average 85's, or 1 real nice 86.5 and have $$ left over... the 86.5's had s4 brakes and front suspension, abs as an option, a few other neat refinements that'll save you some $$ on upgrades later.... might even find a nice s4 for 20k also... they've got bigger valves, the flappy thing, bigger ports, more HP than predessors too.... in fact, the later the MY, IMO, the better the car overall, unless you just like the lines on the older stuff and are willing to R&R everything under the body to reap the benefits of later MY technologies/performance, etc....

I like the older body style, but '87+ S4s have some advantages: better engine technology with timing belt tensioner (and much more), better power, S4 brakes (86.5+), and looks a lot newer. More complexity, but condition is everything of course. With my '87 the only thing I wish I had is the '89+ digital dash and bosch hammer diagnostic capability.
With that said, I think the ultimate year is '89 both S4 5 speed and GT. The '90 and later got a more complicated rear differential and airbags (which I wouldn't want). That's my opinion. However, I love all year 928s and wouldn't kick any of them 'out of the bed'.

kcattorney:
Take a look at the 12k mile S4 Mark has for sale at 25k, and talk him down a bit. It looks as if it just came off the Porsche assembly line. Otherwise, buy something cheap and nice like my almost-new 89k mile 1985 and just spend a few thousand in upgrades to make it a supercar. 7k supercharger; 2k wheels/tyres; 1k suspension upgrades; 1k kickin' sound system and so-on.

Do you prefer the original body or the later S4? If you prefer the earlier i would suggest none other than an 86.5. The 86.5 has the larger brakes and S4 suspension upgrades that have been already mentioned, but the original body style which is more desirable to some.

Correct me if i am wrong but i think ABS was standard as of 86.5

If you could find one, I think the ultimate stock 928 is an 86 euro. Especially if the original owner ordered some extra's. My 85 is one of the most optioned cars I've seen but an 86 with sport seats could top it.
Ben - I'll correct you, my 85 euro has ABS and the belt tensioner.

well whatever you do, make sure it's very sound... buying a fixer can bury you, unless you plan on doing your own wrenching, and some parts are already getting hard to get/discountinued from porsche....
I kinda like the 968 cabs too, as they have similar lines to the OB's, are later MY's/can be in better condition- and you can go topless... a bit easier to find than a convertable 928 too...
happy hunting!!!
