Default Windshield washers don't work

As the weather deteriorates in Chicago, I pulled on my windshield washer lever on my 84S and wipers wiped but no washer. I read through previous posts and tips. I pulled the RAF wheel and splash shield, I got the tank out. There was lots of rust in the bottom and I cleaned it out flushed the tank, the pump and the float switch. I could run the pump when I hooked it to 12V. I re-assembled but still no washer. The connector at the pump showed one wire at ground. The other wire did not show ground or 12VA with pulling of washer lever. The wipers do wipe for 4-5 cycles but no washer. The fuse is OK.
I looked at the PET and except for a lot of check valves, etc. there seems to be one pump and distribution hoses. I think my problem is electrical and Iamb not quite sure how to trace wires to find the defect. Have any of you had experience and can point me in the right direction? Does it sound like a relay?
Thanks in advance,
Dave Mack.

MY would help. On my 83 the pump is on the inner guard panel. It was dead due to lack of use, rusted up tight. Removal is a b@stard on a RHD car, but in the end it came out. You can usually revive with a dismantle and clean internals.
Try the fuse first, I forget if there is a relay involved, but its likely. Find the fuse and relay number on www.928gt.com web site.

Thanks, JP
Mine's an 84 so I think it's like yours. The pump did run when hooked to 12V but not with the washer switch. I'll check for relay, but fuse was OK (it's not exactly clear which fuse but all were OK and the one I think is it is OK too.) Looks like I'll have to trace wires as best I can.

BTW, the pump I saw was at the bottom of the washer tank. The output hose was a braid- reinforced clear plastic hose that disappears up by the windshield. Is there another secondary pump somewhere? If so where? I've heard indications that there is another pump and it's very hard to get to. Also there is no mention of windshield washer fuse in my owner's manual; what fuse might it be? MY 84.
Thanks again,
Dave

the pump in the bottom of the tank is for the headlight washer ! the pump for the regular windshield is mounted on the inner fender panel below the coolant reservoir. The washer systems use three different pumps.

Thaks Jim,
Can I get to it from below or above? That's what I was afraid of.

Before you pull the pump, check the hose where it attaches to the tank. Mine developed a blockage in the hose right where it attached to the reservoir. I pulled the hose and a little piece of gunk fell out and, viola, working washers!

Somebody recently posted that they just routed the windshield washer hose to the headlight washer pump since they never used the headlight squirters and it's so difficult to access the windshield washer pump.

No luck so far. Now that I know there are 3 pumps, I find that I am O for 3. As I said the only one that I know should work is the one on the bottom of the washer tank (1984), since I tested it with 12V source. I can't hear any pumps working at all, headlight, intensive or regular windshield when I use the appropriate switch. I'm thinking it's possible that all pumps have died one by one but maybe more likely there is a common failure point such as wire harness, fuse or relay. The wipers do run as they should when I press normal or intensive winshield wash switch.
Good thing I put REJEX on my windshield. Maybe it will keep the snow, salt and road crub from sticking.
Thanks,
Dave

As Jim said, look on the RHS inner guard - from the wheel well you should see three small rubber bits sticking through (1/8" dia x 1/4" long?) - these are the mounts to isolate vibration/noise. lube these and push then through from the wheel well to release the pump. With my RHD car its under the brack m/cyl and a nightmare to get out and back. Its probably rusted up or clogged with crap. There is somebody selling new VDO washer pumps (correct for 928) on ebay at ~$35 buy it now - I have one ready to go in.

Eureka! Got the regular windshield washers working. Per JP I pulled the pump inside the engine compartment near the RF wheelwell. A PITA. Tested it, just buzzed. Took apart, cleaned it, it pumped great. Warning: the electrical can't be hooked up backwards but the hoses can! The second time I got it all back together it worked great. I was able to shove the nipples through the wheel well and back twice and they still looked to be in fine shape. A little extra slack in the hoses would have been nice.
Thanks to all. My WSM has very little, just how to aim headlight washers. I would have been stumped without you guys.

Dave, Well done! Now try to visualize getting the pump out and back with the brake master and pipes in there! The water connections are marked B and D (IIRC?)...whatever the German is, D is output or Delivery. I use one of these as my model RC fuel pumps, as being gear type they are reversible and can therefore be used the empty the model tank as well as fill it.

Sure seems like Porsche could have put the pump somewhere more accessible. It seems like everything is wedged in on this car.
Thanks again,

Make sure all your check valves are ok. They might be bad. I advise you pull the plumbing from inside the hood, replace the check valves and the put it back in...
