Question Timing Belt Confusion

I have an '85 32 valve automatic, new to me this summer, no maintenance history so I am changing my first timing belt.

I have reviewed the proceedure in the WSM and the very good posts here on the subject.

My problem is; prior to removal of the old belt I am checking timing of the cams before I lock the crank to remove the damper, etc. I rotate to TDC on the crank indicator and the cam sprockets both line up with thier marks, rotate to the 45 degree mark , no historical markings on the cam sprockets. However, if I continue to rotate to TDC again, this time cam sprockets do not line up, continue to the 45 degree mark and now I do have markings on both cam sprockets.

Maybe this really doesn't matter but it sure is confusing.

Any insight would be appreciated.

The crank turns twice for every time the cams turn once. The PO marked the wrong 45 degrees. The correct mark should be exactly opposite their mark. Either one should be safe for removal, but it will be easier to line up later if you make the new marks in the correct place (22.5 cam degrees after the factory cam sprocket markings).

Thumbs up

Thanks for the confirmation. The more I thought about it the more that seemed to be the case but just didn't want to screw up.
