928 GTS vs. '99 996

Burning Brakes
Anthony, First I love the 3.6T, that will be my next Porsche, hopefully an addition to the GT. I think you proved my point on the GTS though. My GT runs the QM in 13.7@104. I love the idea of the larger engine with its extra torque, stock big brakes and a little more beef in the haunches, but they just don't seem to perform like I would expect. IcemanG17 is on the right track, stick with the S4 five speed, it has tons of potential.
If I was looking at a 911 it would be air cooled and turbo charged

If prices keep dropping, a 996 is a likely candidate. A '94 3.6T would be high on my list, but as mentioned prices seem to be going up on those cars and I expect it will be more than I'm willing to pay. At some point I'd like to get my hands on a 944 Turbo S. And I always thought that a '86.5 928S would make a nice companion to my S4. And maybe - just maybe - a 993 TT, preferably in Arena Red.
I think we're going to need a bigger garage...

Brent,
When you think about it the extra displacement only yields 30+ HP over the GT. Odds are that the GTS is slightly heavier. The added braking is great. But between the rotors and the calipers and 17" wheels you are adding considerable weight. They all have the rear A/C which also adds weight over cars that don't add the Tranny oil cooler and other misc odds and ends and what have you gained performance wise that the added weight hasn't cancelled out? I am sure I can better the 102 speed and possibly eak a few tenths out of the QM time. The road I use slopes uphill after the first 1/8 mile. I have very few places I can safely use the Gtech and that is only at certain times on certain days. The other problem is I need to start on the shoulder and the have those stupid sleeper grooves cut into the road which looses me a little time also. All in all I am sure a healthy GTS is about the same performance as a healthy GT. Maybe a little more torque and better 60-130 times.
Instead of a day of appreciation for these cars we need to have a day of performance evaluations were we can dyno and run 1/4 times to see what benefits each car offers.
