Uhh Mark, I think he was referring to the X-over in black...

 

Now that Garth pointed me in the right direction I can confirm the GT resonators...................the rear muffler will be reinstalled to allow sustained high speed runs hopefully with little power loss.

 

Where can we see some before/after dyno numbers? How would those numbers be with X-Pipe AND high flow cats?

Update: the clamps that Dave sent along with the X loosened so while I had the car up on the lift yesterday doing tranny fluid (seperate post) fill I effected a repair.

The new X fits over the pipes going toward the resonators so clamps have to seal over 2 pipe diameters........I removed the clamps and wrapped the joint with exhaust bandage and re-installed the clamps. Now the car sounds even throatier. Took the SO for a spin up toward the local ski hill and she complemented the sound and thats with the RMB still on..............the rear muffler remains parked!!!

mine just recently developed a rattle of some sort. It is noticible in the car and also below around the area of the x-pipe. Did yours do the same?.

Nope, no rattle.

Did you fully remove the air pump and all the associated plumbing? I had my air pump off before fitting the X so when I removed the Cats all the plumbing went too.

Do you have the hardware kit Motorsport supplies? I replaced the manifold nuts & bolts, gaskets and installed the clamps between the X and the resonator pipes.

 

I suppose I should include a set of instructions...

The clamps I supplied should be tightened down until they can't be tightened any more. They are meant to deform around the pipes. I included lengths of fiberglass heat wrap to be wrapped around the smaller section of pipe which seal the junction perfectly. If you use all the wrap, it will be able to flex and work it's way loose. One wrap folded over is all you need. I included enough for at least 2 applications.

My clamps are fully tight and deformed and with the 'wrap' I used yesterday......... all's sealed.

Now I have to deal with the air/fuel mixture. The air filter is standard paper type and is clean but the car 'flatens' out in 3rd gear WOT and I suspect its fuel related, or lack thereof. The fuel filter is also relatively new.

Any thoughts?...............adjustable fuel regulator perhaps?

 

How can you tell which resonators your car is fitted with?
I have a stock exhaust with a RMB and it's fairly loud. The X-pipe is on my must have soon list but I'm mildly concerned about the sound.

 

Our freindly 'lister Garth S posted some photos which I compared to what is fitted on my car....................apparently sometime during the '88 S4 production Porsche fitted the smaller resonators..........do a search.

If your concerned about the sound level you may want to consider refitting the rear muffler as the X is louder than the stock cats.................so far I've had my X'd car described as a racing motorcycle and a high revving Ferrari.

Now that my system has the SOs blessing I'm leaving the rear muffler off for sake of the lighter weight, more power and sweeter sound of the X/RMB combo.

So you are running the x-pipe with no cats, correct? Maybe I will get the high flow cats just to control the sound a bit. I'd rather not put back on that heavy rear muffler.

 

Correct no cats.............Motorsport X, GT type smaller resonators and a RMB. Sweet breathin'.

Motorsport have high flow cats to match their X.
