Default brake rotor question

Just trying to remove the front rotors to replace them and I cannot extract the philips head screw which holds the rotor. - Question - if I drill out the screw are they really necessary to reinstall? The first one I took off stripped the threads clean on the inside of the back plate. I thought I remember reading that they may not be that necessary. Is this true?

They're actually not structural, but every time you remove a wheel your rotors may move a little. I'd recommend you use them.

Pick yourself up an impact driver (hand tool). Perfect for loosening these screws. I got myself a Husky 47200 from Home Depot for just this purpose and it worked like a charm.

I think you're right, though, they're really not needed.

Well, I drilled one out, and the other I was able to extract with some old fashioned muscle. I did put the one screw back but I doubt I'll go searching for another soon. I think I'll make a stop at HD tomorrw and pick up the impact driver - Thanks Guys.

Just get a metric screw from Lowes or Home depot, they have those in the "hard to find" hardware section. Put some anti seize on them before reinstallation and the come out with no problem in the future.
You can drive the car without these too no problem...
