Default Anybody close to Canada/US border in NY or VT? Newbie needs help

Ok,
So I'm picking up my very first 928 this weekend (Oct 1st)! I'm psyched! 86.5, lsd, sport seats, auto.

One slight problem: US customs requires the original title 3 days before the car can cross the border, and I haven't received it yet.

Solution: I need to store the car for a couple of days in the US close to the US/Canada border. I'm in Montreal. Anybody arround that area willing to have a spare 928 in their driveway for a couple of days?

I know of some garages where I can store it, but I'm hessitant to leave it there. This is my baby we're talking about

Thanks for your time.

Can't the seller drive the car across the border and then sign over the title to you? I guess the car would have to be close for him to be willing to do that.

Well, I suppose he could, but he's 10 hours away.... (in PA).

This is a requirement by US customs. They do a search on the VIN to verify that the car is not stolen. I have to give them the title. They need 3 days to do the search, then I must show up at the border with the car. They give the title back to me at that point. I'm not allowed to bring the car out of the US untill this has been done.

Thanks for the sugestion though.

Regards,

Are you using a customes broker? I brought a car down from Montreal last year and used one to handle the paperwork, it was inexpensive and really made the process smooth.

BTW, I am an hour ffrom the border in NH, near Waterville Valley.....Maybe not the spot you were looking for, but I can put your shark up for a while, if nothing else turns up.

Hi Gretch,
I'm not using a broker, I'm doing the paperwork myself. I've done it before, it's not difficult. The only snag is this stupid 3 day thing with US customs. Canada customs is a breeze (sort of...)

Thanks so much for the offer. I mapquested you, and you are about 4 hours from me, which is a little far. Although a ride in your SuperShark might be nice...

Anybody closer?

Brian,
Wrong side of the border to help .... but you are absolutely correct on the 3 day orriginal title thing: US Customs is inflexible on this.
Registry of Import Motor Vehicles here is a breeze for 15+ year old cars ... 6.1% excise plus $100 for A/C , and GST. Most provinces accept receipts at the Red Book value .... which magically was $6600 for my '88 S4 two years ago: you may be in the $4000 range today. Good luck.

I just sold my bug to a CanadIEN (Montreal). All customs needed was a copy of the title. THe purchaser then was "supposed" to go to customs before he drove across the border. He didn't. He just drove across and sent me the plate back a couple days later. I'm not advocating this, but...

BTW, he did have the original title with him and a bill of sale. Don't know if that made a differecne or not.

Be interesting to know if he has a hassel getting it registered....You need the customs and duty documents to get a car last registered in Canada, registered in the States.....

BTW, when you cross into Canada from the US, you do not go through US customs.......so that kinda mistake is easy to make.....

When my '74 TR6 made the crossing, the guy driving it thought the customs guy waved him "through" when in fact he was being waved "over".....big difference....and made for a pretty funny story over beers.....Thankfully the customs broker was waiting for him and was able to peel the US Customs official off of him.....

No one would think of using a TR6 as a mobil explosive anyway.....It is not likely to get to the intended destination without breaking down.....

Hi Andrew,

When I've done it before I've gone by the book. I don't know how he would have been able to register it since the DMV (called SAAQ actually, french) here needs the original title stamped by US customs. He may have gone down after with the title, waited three days, then went back to pick it up with the car.

When I did it last time, US customs physically came out to verify that the VIN on the car was the same as on the title.
