I found out why the speedo/odo and other guages work when they want to tonight. Anyone really good at electrical wiring in the '84 928? Turns out, when someone at some point had their radar detector and new stereo installed, some sub-human crackmonkey vampire tapped probably 10 wires to find a ground and a live wire. They then decided that Porsche clearly provided too many wires and cut and stuffed TWO (not one, TWO) bundles of wires, wire wrapped them, and stuffed them deep in the carpet alongside the console.

Anyone in the Boston area up for a weekend of helping me out in exchange for beer of your choice? I have the workshop manuals, and have been working through them, but jeez, I'm a far better mechanic than electrician.

My alternative is to pay through the a.... for a local shop to figure out what's been done and repair it.
