COOLANT TEMP RISING

COOLANT TEMP RISING
My temp gauge always sat at the first mark(maybe a little over) but today traffic came to a stand still on the highway and my temp indicatar slowly rose to the second line but not going over. As traffic staring moving my temp slowly fell a little but sat between first line second and held steady. At stoplight it will rise.
What is normal? When shoud I be concerned? The temp today was around 75F and sunny.

Thanks
Michael

The temp gauge is OK as a rough indicator, but it is not a precision instrument, especially with the conventional 928 "bad connection" and "bad ground" problems.
As a general rule - If the temp goes up when the car is run hard, the problem is coolant flow; if the temp goes up at low speeds and idle, the problem is air flow.
Check two things:
- The viscous clutch on the belt-drive fan may need filling or replacing.
- Make sure that the electric fan operates correctly.
See http://www.nichols.nu/cat22.htm for help.

Must be an air flow problem ! I have removed the spoiler (awaiting new part) and of course inner fender walls. I drove the car to an Porsche Autocross event(watch not participate) and thats when my erratic temperature started, makes sense? Can these cars be that sensitive?
Thanks

My 88 S4 would run just above the first white line with 75deg thermostat.
Ran at the top white line with 95deg thermostat.
So you could just be a couple degrees warmer.
Without inner fender walls, the airflow change might just be enough to get the
temp gauge to read a slighter warmer temp.
Been advised by the wisemen of 928 that running without a bellypan is enough
to reduce the effectiveness of the 928 cooling system.
Didn't know the NYC shop could source a 95 deg thermostat.
Scared the heck out of me when the coolant gauge didn't stop rising till it hit
the top white line. This after I had overheat warning when thermostat stuck closed.

" Make sure that the electric fan operates correctly."
When stopped, engine off, no electric fan was running and my temp guage was hovering near the top mark before the overheat zone.
How do I check if my electric fan is working?
