Default new motor mounts and steering rack-- OMG what a difference!

I had Metric Auto Works of Saint Paul put in a rebuilt steering rack and a set of Anchor mounts in. I picked up the car over lunch today. What a difference!

Besides leaking like a sieve, my steering always felt heavy with the old rack. The steering effort is perfect now. Apparently I was not getting all the power assist Porsche intended.

And the motor mounts! It's like a different car. I used to feel a clunk every time I shifted into drive, reverse, or park. I suspected an impending tranny issue. But when I shifted into drive today, I felt: nothing. I had to doublecheck that I'd put it in gear. The car felt so much smoother, it has changed the character of the ride. The car feels decades newer!

I am very pleased.

And the guys at Metric are very nice. I could tell they were conscientious. And they LIKED working on the 928.

Thumbs up!

Both are on my list of things to do. Any chance you would share the final cost with us? Or me via PM?

1381.00. I supplied the mounts and the steering rack boots. I still need an alignment, although they did the best they could considering that the car had been lifted.

did that include the stearing rack too? not a bad price, it sounds like.

If you're interested, you have a twin over at Sears Imports right now -- 62k miles, for about $10k.

That included the rack.

I saw that ad for the one at Sears... mine's an automatic. I wonder if they'd swap?

I drove it yesterday, to check it out, and it was quite nice. It's an automatic too.

Nice to hear about the improvement. I changed my motor mounts on my car and things got worse. I donno, but the car still does not feel smooth like i expected even though we used Porsche original mounts. The clunk in the Auto tranny is still there!!! and now i have a vibration at 1600-2200 rpm depending on my throttle position. I wonder if the mounts were defective.

My tranny mounts are original and have not been changed... do you think it is related to them?

I have no idea how to evaluate tranny mounts.. Just seems possible if the motor mounts went, the tranny mounts may have gone too. Maybe one of the true gurus can weigh in on how to decide if a tranny mount has gone bad?

There are rubber mounts the tranny hangs from. I am going to replace mine sometime this winter...

They're really bushings.

The 928 does not have 'mounts' in the conventional sense of the word.
