Planning on cleaning up and painting the brake calipers on my '86 Euro this Sat/Sun. I've never bled my own brakes. (Insert laugh here) Just curious if anyone in the Orange County area (I'm in Huntington Beach) would be interested in helping out? I'll supply the libations, (I'm Irish so there's a full bar and a keg of Sierra Nev.), and pizza or BBQ.
In short, any assistance/guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks
Rory

Probably gonna take two days - Day 1, remove, prep and paint calipers - let dry overnight. Day 2, install calipers and bleed brakes.
Just don't paint 'em red (not a good look on a white car, IMHO).

There's no need to remove the calipers to paint them.
Just tape them off and cover the entire wheel arch area in masking paper. I did mine a few weeks ago. Once i get the "Porsche" font decals and install them i'll post some pix.
Good luck on your project.

Wade, good advice. I followed it.
Yo Philly! and Randy, I'm using the process that was posted here on the list:
http://members.rennlist.com/v1uhoh/brakerf.htm It seems the most thorough yet efficient.
And Randy, don't try to foil my color-scheme already...
I appreciate all your input, now I just need to find some takers

Don't forget to get about 20 cans of brake cleaner! Okay maybe not 20, but you'll need a lot. The caliper need to be pretty clean otherwise the paint doesn't like to stick very well. Also, if you hven't done it already, paint the hubs of the rotors (usually silver, but that's up to you). Really cleans things up. Good luck.

If you have really heavy build up of rotor dust, and brake cleaner isn't doing it, try using M.E.K. You can find it at most hardware stores. Be careful though. Use a respirator if you have one. Between the dust and the solvent it can give one hell of a headache!
Randy's time line if off by a factor of 50%. He didn't allow for all the beer drinking between each step.
That right there cuts each day in half.
Red calipers? To overdone. My white 86.5 has pure white calipers with red lettering. Really stands out on a white car. Don't forget to clear coat them or give them a coating of Rejex to prevent the dust from clinging to them in the future. Good luck. Post some pics when your done.

Sierra, you have given me something to think about. Although my intent is to put clear coat on them, I can't say I ever thought of white on the main portion of the caliper. Could be interesting.
Add the 50% Irish factor and possibly more if I get the goodies I ordered from Nicole.

I've got the "paint the calipers" on my list too. I've got a white car and was thinking about red, but I've seen a few with the yellow calipers and red lettering that stand out real nice. I may go with that color scheme when I get around to it.
