Need Airbag Memory Erase Procedure
Yea, I'm a bone head! I replaced the steering rack a few weeks back and had to remove the airbag steering wheel to reset it to center. Well, I never checked the horn to see if it worked...just assumed it would. Tried it yesterday and nuthin!
Today, I pulled the bag and wheel again to check and clean the contact pin and ring. So I hooked up the battery to check the horn without hooking the airbag back up. Horn worked, so I disconnected the battery again. After the 10 minutes of wait time for the airbag system per the manual, I hooked the bag back up and buttened up all the rest. Connected the battery, and discovered there was an airbag fault.
Scratched my head and retraced my steps. Checked all connections and hooked the battery up again. Fault still there. Read the trouble shooting in the manual and I think I caused this issue, by #1 connecting the battery before hooking up the bag, or #2 more possibly hooking up the battery with the ignition on.
Either way, it seems that if there is a fault at some point, it STAYS in the memory and it MUST be cleared manually.
Does anyone know how to clear the memory? I did a search and the 944 guys just have to make a "local tool" meaning a switched wired to ground the system at presice 5 sec intervals. What is the routine for the 928 and what tool(s) are needed?
Thank youi in advance!

Way-ell, you're gonna need to make a trip to the local Porsche dealer with a Bosch hammer. You're correct that once the fault is set, it won't go away until reset. AFAIK, the Speake Spanner won't do it on a GTS. Some shops will just hook you up and reset it with no 'check out' of the system. But, it's doubtful that you'll get out without them actually doing the full checkout and inspection.
I know my local shop wouldn't touch it without insisting on a full test - 2 hours of labor min. I told them to ram it, but luckily mine is a 90GT, and I used a Spanner on it. If you can find someone wiht the actuall Bosch tool, it's a snap to do. But, good luck, no many in private hands.

The 'search' feature here is your friend:

I'll bet Greg Brown has a Hammer - at least I hope so. I was planning on having him reset my airbag fault warning next time I came up.

Thanks Randy, I looked it up, but forgot what key word I used. I only came up with the 944 fix. I called Rusnak Porsche and am waiting for a call back. We will see how generous they are.

Keith,
If you'd like to drive over for a visit, Dan and Yolanda at Exotic has a Hammer. I'm having some problems with the display in my GTS, I suspect I may have a connector problem.

Rich...is the hammer small enough to throw in the back seat and bring it to the German Autofest this weekend??? Maybe I should call those guys before they come out.

I tested brakes for ABS and it wasn't off. Later on the RDK came back online, but the airbag warning stayed on.
I had my shop, Exotic Motorwerks, check it, and the reading was "improbable reading" or something like that. The error was cleared and a few days later (on another HOT day, we get those here in AZ), the chain of events repeated.
I'm hoping I dont' need to pull the pod and dive into the display controller. Hot situations can affect connectors, so I'll go after that first.

Ack - not familiar with that one, Rich!
Pulling the instrument cluster is actually pretty easy - takes me 15 mins. now to remove, 30 minutes to reinstall (just did it again this weekend). There's a good write-up by Schocki here on how to do this on the GTS.
If you're up for it, I'd suggest pulling the cluster and applying DeOxIt (or similar) to all 4 wiring harness connectors, as well as the pin connectors inside the cluster.
I've been able to resolve all my issues except fot the exterior temperature indicator continuing to read inacurately - dammit! I'm starting to think the culprit is actually the temp sensor located in the driver's side mirror assembly.

Dan Warner of Exotic Motorwerks brought the Bosch Hammer out to The German Autofest this weekend and he hooked it up to my car. The hammer came up with several faults and he cleared them all...including the airbag issue. Re starting the car, it had to learn it self again, so I let it idle for a bit. One thing I did not expect was the performance of the car took what I consider a giant leap! I simply could not believe it! I can only figure that what ever faults were in there were keeping the performance from optimum. I drove the car home last night and back out again today and the pull/power was totally unexpected. I thought the car was powerful before. Now, everytime I hit a gear on hard acceleration all the way through 5th, I get thrown into the back of the seat. WOW!!! We hooked it back up again today to see if there were any re occurring faults...NONE! Interesting how everytime you unhook the battery, it will store a fault AND hooking it back up wth the ignition on will store a pile of faults. I think there were faults from the previous owner as some issues didn't make sense as I never had those issues.
I was so impressed, that Dan and I talked about him bringing the hammer out to SHARKTOBEFEST to read/clear codes for those who wish to have it done.
Simply amazing!

Keith,
does it just store one fault for all battery disconnects or each one individually ? After reading earlier that battery will drain fairly quick if not running I installed a knife switch (cutoff) on ground cable. Is it a bad think to disconnect battery often ? I travel alot and was thinking knife was nice to have while parked at airports in parking garages could just kill everything and until they look in rear at battery would not be able to hotwire.
