Default Recommended Fluids (and quantities)...

84 S with Auto Trans.

Things are looking up...since I found out WHY the car won't start (see other thread--no power to fuel pump), I have a new outlook on life.

Now, I did work on the BMW 318is (1991) this weekend--got it's oil leak fixed. Need to get a couple of CV boots (and a muffler) to finish off the job. To verify that there were no remaining leaks, I put whatever cheap 20w-50 Oil I had into the car.

So, I am likely to be changing the fluids in that BMW in the very near future. Mobil 1 for the engine. Redline D-4 ATF for the manual trans (this one takes ATF), and 75-90 for the differential.

Figure if I am going to order, I might as well get for all the cars (including the 928 and the 325es my Brother is going to work on).

Can anyone give me recommended fluids (Redline is highly recommended on Roadfly for the BMW), weights, and quantities for an 1984 928s? Recommendations other than Redline/Mobil 1?

I will peruse the owners manual (sure it has it in there), but knowing that the ATF fill point is below the trunk--it is good to hear from others (a statement like "the Manual says xx quarts, but you better get an extra one--some always spills on filling" can save HUGE hassles.

Thanks!!

Doug Hillary's the one to go to for any petrochemical questions. Resident Rennlist "expert' listened to by all. Do a search on his name and "ATF". Besides engine oil he's also up to speed on the auto tranny fluids.

Take your pick as long as it's a synthetic. Doug uses Castrol Transmax. If you want to get all of it out be sure and also drain the torque converter by spinning the crankshaft (clockwise) until the drain holes line up through the slots in the bottom of the housing. Between the converter and the tranny you'll use just about 6 quarts. Fill level is sensitive so be sure the car's level, get it warmed up then s-l-o-w-l-y add 4-6 oz. at a time until full. Don't overfill.

My 1983 owners manual says I can use 20W50, and recommends 20W50 over a specific temp range. Since synthetic 20W50 will have superior flow characteristics over mineral oil of the same designation, I strongly recommend AMSOIL. They are about the best available. You can order from the net and they'll drop ship to your location. I really like their gear lube too

Here's a gear lube thread to go along with the motor oil. http://www.network54.com/Forum/messa...eid=1125602339
